Pre-race routine:

Woke up without difficulty even though I was somewhat sleep deprived. Took a shower and packed up my things and took the bus to the start line. Put my things on the UPS truck and headed off to pick up my bike at the tennis courts. I got some air in the tires and headed for breakfast. Cheese eggs, sausage, grits, biscuit, muffin, milk, coffee, and OJ. Not really breakfast of champions but it was good enough. After that I filled up my water bottles and headed to mass that was being held by the starting line. I recieved communion because I felt I could use a little Holy Ghost to get me started off right. Legs were feeling pretty okay. A lot of people were starting before the 8 o'clock offical start. This made the event director very mad. She got on the bull horn and demanded people not to leave early for the fact that there would not be any help or volunteers on the bike route. Some inconsiderate people ignored her and rode right passed. I felt bad because she has been working so hard to make the tour safe and a great success.
Event warmup:

Walking the 1/2 mile to retrieve my bike.

Comments:

Today was a different round which consisted of mostly downhills. However there was a tremendous headwind 90% of the time. I met up with Dr. David Linen, an Ochsner Optemotrist, after the first aide station. Yesterday he rode in a group and averaged 18.8mph for the 75 miles. He said he was hurting and said he was going to take today easy. We rode in the rest of the way. Having someone to converse with made the time go by so much faster. The roads were real rough. Dave amd I only stopped at 3 or 4 aide stations to just fill up and answer natures call. The longest stop was at the lunch stop, but we just ate and left. We were both anxious to make it back before 1:30. The hardest part of the trip was at about mile 36-40 where there was a huge accend with a strong head wind. We had a group for this and Dave was pulling about 3-4 people. The first 2/3rds of the coarse was rolling hills but not that big and it flattened out as we got into Louisiana. We caught a small drizzle toward the end of the ride but nothing too bad. Once again there were a lot of road kill. With about 25 miles to go I almost rode over a snake which took a snap twords me as I rode by him. It spooked me out a bit because I have a bad phobia of snakes ever since I was almost bitten by a rattlesnake when I was young. Anyway we made it in right at 1:30 and I was happy to call it quits but I really enjoyed the tour.
Post race
Warm down:

Packed up bike and suit cases. Got some food and 2 beers and told my weekend friends bye and that I was looking forward to seeing them next year. This is something I definatly want to do again.

Event comments:

Spent 4:37 on bike riding and 5:35 from start to finish including rest stops. An improvement in both parts.
