Pre-race routine:

Late decision to go ahead with this race: After breaking my wrist on Sept. 30, it originally looked like I'd still be in a cast until four days after this race. However, at my first followup with the orthopedist, he moved up the cast removal a week...meaning I'd be in a removable brace as of three days before the race. Knowing the cast would be off, I started running again on 10/19 and got in five workouts leading up to the race.

Checked out expo and waited for my wife's 5K race to start (half-hour before the 10K). Had a little coffee, mini-Clif bar, half a banana at the expo. Once Liz's race started, I warmed up.
Event warmup:

Stretches (hard to stretch quads with my wrist brace and still healing wrist). Worked up to some good strides. Watched the 5K finish, since it was near the 10K start...thought Liz might finish before I had to start, but I had to walk away to get ready for my start. As it happened, I nearly missed my start...got lined up about 1 min. before the gun.
Run

Comments:

Wanted to go out around 7:05 and thought I was doing no better than that, but I hit 1 mile at 6:56. 2nd mile was 6:50 (incl. one big downhill)...dialed back the rest of the race. 5K split = 21:29.

No chip timing. 45:59 is an honest watch time (gun time was 46:04).
What would you do differently?:

Maybe hold back a bit in first mile, but I was really only about 10 sec. under my proposed pace, so I may just not be quite ready for a 7:05 pace. Generally comfortable mechanically, though, and didn't leave anything on the track.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back to expo with Liz.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I suppose not having run for three weeks from Sept. 30 through Oct. 19, but I felt pretty good, though a bit gassed the last mile. This was a PR, but I expected that since my last 10K was more than 2 years ago (so long ago that my previous 10K PR was my split in the LA marathon in March).

Event comments:

The 10K has a much smaller field than the 5K (which had almost 1500, including a lot of joggers/walkers). Course is deceptively hilly...I heard a number of FOP 5K finishers commenting on that. Organizers do a good job, very upbeat announcers at the start, finish, and expo.
