Swim
Comments: Many athletes turned and walked away after it was annouced no wetsuits. I gave it long thought too but decided to make my first OWS right here. Lots of breast stroking going on. My race was cooked after this start. I verged on panic for most of the time in the water. What would you do differently?: Swim in OWS without my suit. But this does raise a safty factor so maybe just more long stuff in the pool. Transition 1
Comments: Heart rate was out of control and I walked to try to get it down. No luck Noticed a lot of blood on my towel as I changed into my bike shoes. Checked my left Big toe and saw a large gash at the crease. Pushed the flap of skin back down and shoved my shoe on, HTFU right. Bike
Comments: Noticed a few drops of blood out of my shoe as I cleared the park entrance but the toe only thumped from then on. My heart rate was skyhigh in the beginning from the swim 157bpm. I took it very easy to bring it down but that took over 8 miles before I got normal. The swim really freaked me out. We got slowed down and stopped for ambulances for a 7 person crash at the bridge crossing Octra creek. Was announced to be very dangerous but still people throw caution to the wind, dumb. The big hill slowed in both cadence and speed but everyone made it up. What would you do differently?: Get out of the water in better shape. Transition 2
Comments: WALKED pretty much the heat could be felt instantly. I knew the run was going to hurt. Blood had clotted under the toe and I gingerly put a sock over it. What would you do differently?: Leave a water bottle in transistion for use on the run in a case like this. Maybe in a small cooler. Run
Comments: No piriformis issues. I still used the Galloway walk/run but more walking then I would have liked. Could feel the legs on the verge of cramping. The heat was cooking me. The cut I got under my big toe was aching and affected my pushoff. What's the saying it's not the miles but the little pebble in your shoe which slows you down. Post race
Warm down: Got the double hose shower by a volunteer after the chute delightful. What limited your ability to perform faster: FEAR, should have prepared for the swimming without a wetsuit. I feel good about not giving into my fear and conquered. Not much to prepare for the odd injury to my toe but it did affect my run. Event comments: This was my first Olympic race, noticed there are more seriously trained athletes at this distance. I like the distance and was overall happy with my results due to the personal issues I had to overcome. Just starting the race was tough. Big thanks to the support from my family and friends. My taper week was to be spent at Teen Bible camp. But was interuppted by the passing of my uncle. So I headed to the funeral from camp. Was prepared to miss this event. After some proding I decided late friday to drive the 7 hours home. So after a very short night of 3 hours sleep, got up and had some breakfast. Then packed my gear and loaded the bike before driving the hour to Perryville. The Park was closed until 6am so I had some more time to think.
Not much just a little streching. Focused on the moment and get my head out of the personal situation I am dealing with. Was a good thing the wetsuits were not allowed, it gave me something to really think about, like not going.
