Run
Comments: 55 degrees and 10 mph breeze. Change from sunny to overcast over course of race. Set PR for this race / course by 1:13 over my previous best time in this race back in 2005. Despite wanting to go out at 8 min pace and build I went out too fast. Settled in for the next mile before hitting the rollers between miles 2 to ~3 1/2. Focussed on sustaining effort here on the inclines and not pushing too hard (as I was starting to have some abdominal cramping) so that I could build to a strong finish the last 2 miles. At about 3 1/2 miles started picking pace back up. Started picking a few people off here and there and unlike previous years I wasn't getting passed by others. Last 0.5 miles was very uncomfortable and a struggle. Looking at my pace for that last 0.5 mile I now know why it hurt. What would you do differently?: Nothing today. Other than the first mile being a touch fast the race unfolded as I had planned. I wanted to PR this course and I did. Post race
Warm down: Walked around for awhile before taking chip off and leaving the finish area. I was a little light headed, had some stomach cramping and was afraid to stop moving and bend over. All good pain / discomfort providing validation of the effort I gave today. Walked over to the park and had some cider, banana, chowder and listened to the band for about 1/2h. What limited your ability to perform faster: Weight. I'm only ~2 pounds heavier than IMLP weight but I'm hanidcapping myself by not getting lighter. While I'm really psyched to have taken time off my prevous best for this course I'm completely convinced that if I can drop at least 10 pounds before next spring I've got a shot at running low 7's. Event comments: This is just a great race held in my "back yard" on a course I run on all the time. I have no excuse to not do this race every year. Well organized. Lots of water (not that I used any) as it's an out and back with 2 water stations (thus 4 opportunities for water). Post race activities good with cider, fruit, chips, bread, chowder while socializing listening to a local band jam. Would be a good race for a early November group get together. There are some very fast kids in this race. I was crushed by an 8 year old who ran a 41:09 and a 9 year old who ran a 38:29. Lots of other high schoolers who just school us older folks. Was pretty cool when my son reminded me that he wanted to do the fun run today and then afterwards him saying that he thought he might want to train to try and run the whole thing next year. 1:30 pm start time. Ate pancakes for breakfast at 8am. Had 2 PBJ sandiwches at 11am. Arrived at race site to pick up chip at 12:10pm. Arrived early as my son wanted to do the 1k fun run which started at 12:45pm. Watched him run, get his finishers ribbon and then got into my pre-race routine of hitting the port-a-john ~4x. Stomach was a little upset. Not sure what was up with that.
Ran for about 10 minutes to get good and warm, good sweat going. Stripped down to shorts and dri fit short sleeve shirt. Found a place in the masses near the front as historically folks don't seed themselves very well and I didn't want to have to weave through folks for the first mile. kept moving around to keep everyting loose.
