Swim
Comments: This is the be my first X-Terra Sprint Triathlon, sweet!. I like MTB much better than road riding but I know that the bike/run brick will be hell!! Here we go. As we entered that nasty Tempe lake water, I so wasnt ready for the start. I couldnt get my cap on then I couldnt zip up my wetsuit correctly and my swim mask was set to high, which allowed water to seep in messy ith my stroke. RIght from the get go I saw a few swimmers already turning over to back stroke. Thats not good so close to the start. Normally I start off breast stroking to get past that first 100 meter free-for-all, but te crowd was nothing like Timex and eventhough I was in the back I started my free-style stoke. Swam about 50 meters and my googles started to fill with water, damn!!. This went on throughout the entire race and it really slowed me down. I couldnt FS or the water would get into my eyes, which threw me off course so I had to BS a good 80% of the race. On top of that I couldnt breath!!! I dont know if it was the wet suit of for the fact that... whaterver, I suck at swimming, no excuse!!! Believe it, I past a couple of swimmers. Out of the water and onto the boat ramp that was h@#$ on my feet, luckly I had shoes waiting for me. They were easy to find since mine was one of maybe 12 that were left. On to T1 Really was hoping to beat the 22min mark Est. Time 22:00 min: AT: 24.59 What would you do differently?: Who knows, maybe wear a floaty or jump onto a faster swimmer. Or maybe wear either my full surfer wetsuit or my Blue Seventy suit, instead of my spring suit. To warm for the full, possibly.. Need to be more aggressive and train more.. Transition 1
Comments: Entered T1 and spotted the bike easily, no other bikes around, good no one to slow me down, haha. Got everything together and ran out of T1, that was the first time for that. Transions was good, Dam GPS wouldnt set or aquire the sat underneath the bridge. What would you do differently?: Smaller Camelback or at least a lighter one Bike
Comments: Right out of the gate I hit the trail, but noticed that theres nothing in my legs, damn the last 100meters in the swim I use them to kick me to the finish. It took about a mile or so to get them under me. Thouhgt I was doing pretty good until the second lappers pasted me as if I were riding backwards. First climb shot my strength, so i had to Gu. Noooo!! I dropped it darn it!! Reached the only tech portion of the course and everyone who was in front of me was either walking down or walking up, I blew past them which made me feel better, but two things, one I lost my water bottle and two they will catch me on the next big climb after the the tunnel, oh and I rang my bell as I past them "Ring, ring". Reaching the tunnel was fun, I had one person in front of me, novice. As we entered the tunnel "stay to your Left" was shouted and this guy goes to the right and cuts me off and I lay the bike down. DARN!! I ring my bell "ring, ring" and paddle out of the tunnel as seven other riders ride towards me. It was hard to see and very dusty. Up the next climb, decided to walk since I had no Gu. Finally reached the backside of the course and knew the next mile was a pretty good downhill. Was able to pass six people, love being a Clydes, "move b$$$$, get out the way" Ha, was able to make good time until the next couple of climbs. Into the tunnel, "ring, ring" everytime I entered. came around for the second lap and... darn, they changed the course (made it shorter) Up and around again, found my water bottle and grab it. Also found my Gu pack and ate it... God I hope that was mine.. Second lap was slower but just as fun. Ring, Ring... Into T2 Est. Time 1:15min AT: 1:06.36 What would you do differently?: Need to lighten the bike and load (myself), make sure I dont miss the turn off and ride an extra 100meters in tough terrian. Transition 2
Comments: Darn it, the guy next to me stepped on my new swim mask and scrath the H@## out of them!!! How RUDE!! Got dressed and headed out (after i rang my bell one more time) May God the brick after a MTB ride is sooooo much different than road riding.. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: Jelly legs for the first 1/2 mile and the foot feels great. Had to do alot of run/walk not in shape for the whole thing yet, but was able to run quite a bit of it. Cross the finish line and was greeted by fellow BT'ers and the family. Est. Time 42:00 min AT: 41.33 What would you do differently?: Foot feels much better, need to train harder, increase the pace Post race
Warm down: Walked around, stretch and drank fluids... Race had raffles and i won a box of mint Chocolate Gu which I could only imagine tasting like.... grosh gave it away.. However, csparks won a box of Vanilla Bean Gu and gave me a hand full of the gosh... Thanks and nice to meet you. What limited your ability to perform faster: Swimming, not able to get into my stroke, couldnt breath Bike, had slow start and the up climbs killed my legs, made a right instead of a left turn at Albuquerque. Run, Need to spend more time in running and mentally work through it. Event comments: Est Time 2:20min Actual time was 2:19.07, did really good aout est. of my time Darn it, I should have ran faster!!! Good first Off-road race baseline is set for next year Up next, Bluewater.... Last updated: 2007-09-30 12:00 AM
