Age Group Rank = 47/85
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 1:30 to crying baby. Slept on and off until 3:30. Got up at 3:30 and had 2 cups of coffee, a Cliff bar, and more water. Arrived at race around 5:20am. Set up at transition area.
Event warmup:

None really.
Swim
  • 12m 6s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Forgot to train backstroke...that's what I did most of the way. Kept moving through the whole swim which was good. Never expected to have "issues" in open water. The water was fairly warm and calm, but I couldn't even do 2 strokes of freestyle without breathing/hyperventillating...and I wasn't going fast.
What would you do differently?:

Open water training! I hope I can get over this issue.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Felt better from water to rack than I expected...was able to run the whole way. Wetsuit stuck a bit on my heel, but then popped off easily. Had to put on tank/skort, but didn't take long. Shoes were easy with elastic laces. Ran from rack to "mount" area.
What would you do differently?:

Remember sunglasses.
Bike
  • 43m 4s
  • 9.32 miles
  • 12.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on bike. Passed a few in my age group. For a long time, no females passed me. Felt very strong.
What would you do differently?:

Get a road bike. Learn some basic racing techniques. Learn how to drink water while riding (tried once with no success).
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Easy transition since I didn't change shoes. Only had to remove helmet and rack bike.
What would you do differently?:

Practice shoe change if I get bike shoes.
Run
  • 32m 33s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

First 1/2 mile was sketchy. Felt like my calves and hamstrings were about to cramp. Never felt that before. Ran through it and was happy to see I was running about 11ish min pace. Felt better as the run went. Was able to increase speed for last 1/4 mi. Overall, pretty good run for me.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Take a running clinic to work on technique.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around for 10 min.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

My first race so I don't have much to compare to. It seemed like a perfect beginner race (calm water, flat bike, flat run) with perfect weather. I really need to learn to swim in open water and to train more for all events.
