Pre-race routine:

Had pasta with vegetables last night. Stretched, hydrated, stetched some more. This morning I was up at 5:30am, had a cliff bar and drank water and gatorade. Stretched a bit and then drove to the race.
Event warmup:

I jogged around for 10-12 minutes. The bathroom situation was a MESS! I've never seen such a chaotic setup before, with the line literally stretching all the way through Bushnell Park. So, I found some other porto-potties on the other side of the park, and had to rush just to get back to the starting line. Felt good overall, and was excited to get the race going.

Comments:

My goal was to run 1:30, and I was on pace to do just that through 8 miles. However, I knew the challenge of the final 5k of the course, and really, I just ran out of steam. My lack of arm strength definitely played a part in my dramatic drop in pace, as I was already pushing my arms pretty hard around miles 5 and 6. I'm happy that I was able to set my goal and attack it, but I was ultimately disappointed that I couldn't hold it longer than 8 miles. Of my races this year, I've tended to "shut it down" at 2/3rds of the race, and that loss of mental strength did me in here again. Splits are as follows:

Mile 1: 6:50 est. (missed split)
Mile 2: 6:45 est. (13:35 2 mile)
Mile 3: 6:56
Mile 4: 6:56
Mile 5: 7:00
Mile 6: 6:50
Mile 7: 6:50
Mile 8: 7:02
Mile 9: 7:27
Mile 10: 8:10 est. (missed split)
Mile 11: 8:12 est. (16:22 2 mile)
Mile 12: 8:13
Mile 13: 8:04
O'All : 1:36:00
What would you do differently?:

Because of the shoulder surgery, I haven't been able to lift my upper body. That is going to have to change, even if it's just for maintanence of the strength that I have. Also, I need to do two more workouts:
1) Hill Repeats, plain and simple.
2) Tempo runs at race pace. I ran some 5k's, no real weekly tempo runs to break me from my 8 minute training pace. I just can't expect to race at 6:45-6:50's when I train so slowly.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a fairly bland massage after 10 or 15 minutes of walking around. I don't think it really helped. I had some extreme chaffing from my shorts (that's a new one!) so I didn't really feel like jogging around anymore. I'm pretty sure I'm hammered after that one beer...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental toughness, tempo runs, hill workouts, upper body strength.

Event comments:

As always, the crowd seems to thin at the later portions of the race, when we really need the support. While I like the new course, it still goes through some sections (re: the Colt Building Complex) that are just "dead zones." At least they got rid of the out and back through that section. As my hometown 1/2 marathon, and as one of Beth's races, I'll always run/support it. Thanks again for another great event, with even better weather.

Course: What was described as a FLAT course was anything but that. I believe that this is actually a pretty tough 1/2 marathon course, with MANY rolling hills and false flats. In fact, the entire final 5k is all uphill. I struggled with many of hills, clearly showing my lack of hill training, as well as my lack of arm strength. I just didn't have any to carry me over the hills.
