Pre-race routine:

As this was my first race, I did not really have a pre-race routine. I had planned in my head how I was going to prepare for the race, but the night before the race my wife decided it would be a great idea for me to carpool to the race with one of our friends - completely changing my plans. Race started at 8:00 - awoke at 5:45 to be ready to leave by 6:15. Ate a couple fig newtons, took a couple aleve, and drank a speek stack.
Event warmup:

Ended up going to Peabody Place mall next to beginning line to warm up and use bathroom. Stretched a little bit, but because I had rode with a friend ended up talking more than stretching, so I did not stretch as much as I would have liked.

Comments:

Had a great time doing the race - on course entertainment was complete with an Elvis impersonator and a comedian telling Chuck Norris jokes (Chuck Norris is so fast he could run all the way around the planet and punch himself in the back of the head). There was never a lack of motivation with parents of kids at St Jude lining the race course with signs thanking you for supporting their kids - very inspirational.

I typically like to do a 5/1 run/walk on long runs like this, but the race course was so crowded I could not slow down to walk for the first four miles. My knee (ITB) started to hurt around mile 3 - the pain was bad but not unbearable. I decided I was going to run through the pain, but thankfully my knee stopped hurting by mile 4.

Hit the wall about mile 12. I wanted to slow to walk, but knew that I was on pace to beat my goal of 2 hours so I continued to run - ended up beating my goal time by four minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Nutrition - first time trying to run and drink from a cup - what a humbling experience. Thankfully the weather was cool so I did not get very dehydrated, but had nothing left in the gas tank at the end of the race. Took one gel about mile 6, which had me feel pretty good for the next couple miles and one about mile 9. One more about mile 12, would have helped a lot.
Post race
Warm down:

The only problem with ending the race in a baseball field is that the runners had to walk up the stairs off the field to the first level. After running 13.1 miles I was not overly excited about having to do stairs. Got some food and drink from the hospitality center, found the wife and kids, and went home so that the kids would be on time to walk in the local Christmas parade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to continue to improve overall fitness level and practice nutrition.

Event comments:

This race is to benefit St Jude's Children's Cancer Hospital. It is very worthwhile with motivation from seeing the kids and parents throughout the course.

Course: Course was nice, wandering through Memphis. While relatively flat, you never really realize how hilly Memphis is until you have to run it. Ending in Autozone Park hearing your name called over the loud speaker was a great feeling.
