Swim
Comments: I had a really great swim. I swam really wide on the back stretch because all the swimmers were to my left by at least 15 ft. I am not sure if my sighting was off, but I was fast, so it might have been to my advantage to be a little wide because I didn't have to worry about swimming around anyone. I was the first female out of all age groupers and 2nd female overall! There was a girl close behind me, who actually swam past me at about 300M. I drafted for a while and then lost her when I had to stop to re-Velcro my watch (it came undone 4 times during the swim!), but she must have swam off course or something because I never saw her again and I finished in front of her. I was very pleased with my swim! What would you do differently?: Tape my watch down. It is starting to come undone way too often! In practice, I don't mind too much, but I really don't like it in races! Transition 1
Comments: Pretty nice transition for me. I probably could have been a little faster. I stopped to rinse my feet in the buckets, and almost ate it! My feet were all covered in mud by the time I reached my bike, so next time I will not waste time with the rinse buckets. Bike
Comments: My pace was slightly slower than I had hoped, but I am pretty please with the over all outcome. I was really not prepared for the amount of hills. I have raced in Austin before and the course was more flat than this, so I was surprised by how challenging the course was. I descended my bike split, so my last lap was quit a bit faster than my first. I really think that is because I knew what to expect, when to shift, and the road conditions on my second lap. Also, I gained confidence with all the sprinters I was passing. (It was a nice change from the first lap) I was very surprised at how many guys (and girls) were so nice when they passed me on the 1st lap of the ride! Everyone was very encouraging. One of the most positive rides I've ever had in a race. It was so tough for me, but I did not give up and really toughed it out. What would you do differently?: My lower back and calves really hurt during the ride and into the run from the hills. I think gaining more strength and Flexibility in them would be very beneficial. I saw all the BTer's at the end of the ride cheering me on! It was so awesome to have so much support out there! Thanks guys! Transition 2
Comments: I had some trouble getting my socks on. I have to run with socks on or I get really bad blisters on my heels. That was my only issue and it really slowed me down, usually I don't have so much trouble with the socks. What would you do differently?: I will stretch out the socks when I set up transition so they go on more easily. Run
Comments: This was probably my most disappointing leg of the race. I really have been training well in my runs recently, so I think I was prepared, but I really trashed my legs on the ride and did not have much left in them. I had to walk the long hill after mile 1 and 4. I know that is where I really slowed down. I think that I did a great job gutting it out even though it was hard and I was slow! I felt pretty good other than my Calves being SO TIGHT! Cardio wise I felt good. What would you do differently?: Save a little in my legs for the run. If I had been at my training pace, I would have met my goal- Oh, well! It gives me something to shoot for next time! Post race
Warm down: Drank Sweet leaf tea! (And hung out with Luke and my sis.) What limited your ability to perform faster: The Hills and the tough course. Need more hill training- hard thing to get in Houston. Event comments: It was a blast! Very challenging, but very fun. I missed my goal time by 8 minutes, but considering the course I am very pleased! It turns out, I am a big fan of the Oly! Great Job all you BTer's! It was a great weekend! I had my traditional Cliff Bar for my pre-race breakfast. Luke and I set up transition and then hung out with my sister and her dog. We were there pretty early, so we were not rushed at all.
No warm-up other than the walk from transition to the swim start.
