Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5 AM to an empty house as the wife and kid were out of town. Did 20 minutes of yoga and got in the shower. Bonus of no one being home... Linkin Park... LOUD!!! Got dressed, ate bowl of mini wheats and coffee, checked out BT for a little while. Got my gear together and out the door by 6:30. Had to be to the IOP connector by 7 am as they were going to close it for the race plus needed to make a stop at Goodwill. I know... not exactly a stop on everyone's race morning but the back of the Tahoe was filled with stuff I needed to drop-off and well it's on the way.
Event warmup:

Got parked with no problem. Walked over to race registration area and met a few co-workers there. Found out that we were suppose to go get a race chip, which wasn't in the packet. Walked over there with one of the women from work got chipped and stood around talking. Stretched a little bit, went looking for a porta potty which didn't have a half mile line. Not to self, use the ones at the start b/c there was no line. Met back up with the rest of my coworkers and began walking towards the start line. We were short one person as he managed to lose his car keys between the parking lot and the start. Turns out someone found them and (suprisingly) he had his name on them so the race director announced that they had found them over the PA. The usual, thank yous, anthem, etc. OK... lined up and ready.

Comments:

My secret goal was a 45 minute race. Knew that I had to do 7:15's to make it at 45 even. Went out a little hard but knew that the uphill over the Intracoastal was only .2 miles from the start. Started passing people on the uphill but could feel the HR going up quickly. Let off the throttle a little bit and made it over with no problem.

OK... I am no elitist a*hole runner but why line up in the front if you can't hang with the big kids? I'm done now.

Since it was a 5K and 10K on the same course the turn around for the 5K came up quickly. What was even quicker was the 1 place 5K'er who was already on his way back.... Damn, I still had 5 more miles. Made it to the turn around slightly behind my goal time. Continued to fall off on miles 4 & 5. Was running with a group of 3 or 4 and it was hard to guage my pace on the connector because its just a straight concrete structure with the steep ascent and descent over the intracoastal.

Got to the foot of the incline back over the Intracoastal and kicked it into gear. Left two of the guys who I had caught up to and caught one more guy who had passed me around mile 3 right at the 6 mile back on the island. Sprinted the last .2 miles at 1:12 and finished 45:52.
What would you do differently?:

Pushed a little harder between miles 3-5. Still improved my 10K time from my first by 2:30, so I am happy.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a bottle of water and bottle of Gatorade. Walked back to up to the turn before the finish line to cheer on my coworkers and other runners. As my other coworkers finished, they walked up and helped cheer on the others. Once they had all finished we went back to the awards area and got some scooby snacks... bananas, oranges, cookies, ben and jerry ice cream. Then walked over to ACME Cantina with Monica, Melissa and her sister, Cindy, to get some breakfast beers. MMMMmm... Dos Equis draft at 10AM is Damn Good!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

myself.

Event comments:

Race well organized. Pretty view from the connector but spectators are not allowed on the connector so it's a quiet race as you don't have anyone cheering you on except for the start/finish and at the turnaround. Post race had a lot of food and drinks. Jump castle and pony rides for the kiddies.

Performance: Good
HR was through the roof... over 180 the whole time. But goes to show you can't always trust the HRM.
Course: Out and back course over the Isle of Palms connector. Pretty view of the marsh and the Intracoastal. On the way back over to the island, you get a great view of the Atlantic from the top of the connector.
