Swim
Comments: Straight out into the waves piling up on the beach. Stayed wide maybe too wide but wanted to swim my race. Got into a rythum right away but my goggles kept fogging up. Made sighting an issue but the kayakers kept me straight. The waves made it difficult to breath to my left but I found a combination of right breaths and rolling a bit more on the left got me to clean air. Was odd as I caught the main pack of the group ahead, what's up with that? Best I can figure is waves don't affect tugboats(me) as much as speedboats. What would you do differently?: Replace goggles. Everything else was I pleased with. Transition 1
Comments: Catching the group ahead in the swim made it tougher getting on the course as a few stopped just outside the exit to mount the bike standing still. What would you do differently?: Not much could not have a better parking space for the bike. Bike
Comments: Heart rate was high coming out of T1 156, I must really hate the swim. So it was tough to take advantage of the tailwind as I was attempting to race under control. Clocking 23mph was easy as my HR fell to 148. Then the hairpin turn and into the headwind. Stayed aero I saw my speed down to 16, oh boy this is not good. Focused on staying in control maintain HR 148. Some drafting occured unintentionally due to the mix of experiance levels on the course. What would you do differently?: NOTHING had a strong ride but under control. Had to remember this is a TRI not a bike race. Transition 2
Comments: Pileup at the enterance to T2. Two guys stopped side by side and braked completely to a stop, clipped out and pushed their bikes in together. While the 3 behind them had to stop well before. Didn't run with bike as I was only 25 feet to parking. Run
Comments: First mile was 9:24 but knew I could not hold that pace. Breathing was tough and legs felt heavy. Took my time and regained breathing and then just run like the big man that I am not how I want to be. Finished strong and doubt I could have gone any better,I was gassed. What would you do differently?: Admit to myself I will never be a runner. Just not built right. But looking at what my swim focus did for me in the water maybe. Post race
Warm down: Sucked 2 gatorades and chatted w/ Glenn, Dave and Jason. Found out Dtrain is a sandbagger :) Little time to strech as I had to get back to Pasadena. What limited your ability to perform faster: Body type being wide makes it harder to cycle into the wind and not condusive to running. But as Glen pointed out I would be handy in a dark alley. Event comments: I am pleased overall with this result as it shows an improvement from last year of 6 1/2 minutes. Some of which is conditioning and some is mental. The weather was enjoyable but not ideal for very fast bike splits and the waves undoubtly posed some issues tooo. But unfortantly I was not able to stay to check out everybodies results. This due to a scheduleing error by the wife (thank goodness it was her) this same weekend is our annual church gathering. We have lectures all day out church in Catonsville until 5pm then a social at our house. We had 47 guests last night and I was host/grillman/boat driver and finally channel surfer. So immediately following the race I had to head home the 2 1/2 hours. Shower and get to church before the afternoon lectures. All went as planned and everyone had a great time. But I did have to explain the magic marker numbers on my arm to a lot of folks. :) Last updated: 2007-10-06 12:00 AM

Left the house for the drive down at 4am. Eat a bagel and banana with morning coffee. Once at the race site another banana and some gummy bears( forgot sports beans). Got transision setup and checked in. Way too early I had the best parking spot two away from the bike exit which was very good as I had to leave immediately following the race.
Not much a little walking/jogging but I was feeling pretty good.
