Pre-race routine:

. Dante and I tried to stay up and finish the phils game Saturday night but we both passed out with the score tied 1-1. (That night I had the strangest dreams that somehow combined phillies baseball and triathlons). When we woke at 5:15 we found out the results of the game and were pretty bummed but decided to not let it get us down and to go on with the race. I thought about calling Mom and Dad but then realized it was 5:15 am so didn’t. Eat ,y nice cold peanut butter sandwich and we were on are way.

We packed our stuff up and headed out the lovely crown plaza of Melbourne. (Sidenote never go to Melbourne if you don’t have to- not much there). We walk outside and not only is it raining and looked like it rained all night but it is also really windy. Oh well we said this should be an adventure.
Event warmup:

Got to Transition set up our stuff, went to the bathroom. Went on a warm up run, went to the bathroom. Then we headed down to the River/Intercostal for the swim start. Good news is the rain stopped but the bad news is the wind really picked up. Another piece of bad news that Dante and I will rant about after the race is there are only two bouys to mark the swim route. Keep in mind the swim is about a mile long (we are doing an olympic distance race so 1 mile swim, 26 mile bike, and a 10k run) and the last time we did an oly race we had 4 boueys. So spotting the bouyes would be hard especially with the choppy waves so we figured we would follow the swim caps of the waves in front of us and hope they were going in the right direction

Now into my internal dialogue

Ok my wave is up. I enter the water (we started in the water this time). 3 2 1 Go . . . ok good start. Ouch, who is kicking me must pass her. Opps now I’m kicking someone. Oh elbow. Ok few found my space to swim. I think I’m out in front of the main pack of women. Ok see I can spot the first bouye no problem. Ok focus on form ….reach..pull..reach..pull ect… Ok first bouye and turn ok now just follow the swim caps of the wave in front of me (green swim caps - oh by the way I am a red swim cap and Dante is a hot pink swim cap – soo funny) I hope these green caps are going the right way because I sure can not see any bouye! Ok back to form reach.. pull ect…ect… where is the bouye? Where am I ? Oh there are some other swimmers follow them. Oh there is the bouy. Great turn ok now back to the dock. Where is the dock? Well I know it’s in this general direction. Great now I am passing some green caps. I must be crusing, I actually feel pretty good in the water like I’m glidding…. If I only knew were I was going. Ok I got stop swimming and take a good look because I think I may be way off course because I just swam into a girl going the other way. Oh I’m ok .. Ok back to form…reach..pull ect.. There is the shore ok made it. I hear Diane ( my friend who did the sprint tri and started after us) yelling my name. Yes Go Kelly Go!!
(I finished 5th out of all the females in the swim with a time of 32:09 mins – not bad)

Post race
Event comments:

Great race overall despite the windy/rainy condition. Dante and I were both frustrated with the swim set up – esp Dante apparently he and about 20 other swimmers swam way off course. Poor Dante almost ran into a photographer on his bike going down hill at about 35 miles/hour so we were both just happy that we survived the race. I finished 3rd overall for female and Dante got 1st in Clydesdale div.
