Swim
Comments: Well the first 3 miles went fairly smooth even though my buddy Andy and I couldn't keep the canoe straight paddling on opposite sides so we had to waste energy switching sides. Also, about the 6th time I was out of the canoe pushing I screwed up getting back in and almost capsized us. The canoe was so filled with water we had to stop and drain it. Our poor shoe bag was just floating in the canoe... What would you do differently?: Well, we should probably have figured out that canoes and canoe oars work a bit differently that kayaks. It's too bad about the water level really. I'm just glad I didn't get hurt between the running in the river and my hand getting caught between two canoes. Transition 1
Comments: Hard to judge transition times. After the canoe in front of us cut us off and then left their canoe right in the middle of the walkway, we hopped out of the canoe, drug it up to where it was supposed to go, hit the bathroom, changed into dry socks and slightly soaked running shoes, grabbed some water and headed off down the trail. What would you do differently?: Keep the running shoes dry. Who knew a big plastic bag wouldn't be enough. Bike
Comments: The bike segment occurred after the run for this race. I felt awesome once I got on the bike. The miles just flew by. I was glad to have the camelpak. I went through 2 1/2 liters of water. Unfortunately I ran out with 4 miles to go. Thankfully there was a water station at the 15mi mark. Only two people passed me on the bike portion and I passed alot of folks. The road bike I borrowed was wonderful. Road like a dream. I kept between 25-30 km/hour. My time above is a guesstimate. I'll figure it out later. What would you do differently?: Have more water to drink. Maybe push a little harder here and there. Transition 2
Comments: After walking up Killer Hill I strolled leisurely to my bike. Changed my socks, tossed on the camel pak and helmet, had a bite of power bar and took off. What would you do differently?: Went okay, just sorta slow recovering from that killer hill. Run
Comments: We started out at an 8:30 or so pace, but that dropped off. Noone passed us on the run, but I assume all the fast folks started ahead of us. I felt fine on the run up until the last hill, which was going okay until I hit the steps and then it was over. I think it is good for me to slow down a bit at the water stations so I get the water down as opposed to choking and spewing it all over myself. What would you do differently?: I would maybe try and go a bit faster. As this was my first time on this course I wanted to save some in case the bike was difficult, but I had ALOT left at the end of the race. I probably could have picked it up on the run more. Post race
Warm down: Had a nice long walk back to the bike area. Packed everything up and had turkey sammich. What limited your ability to perform faster: Aluminum canoes and no idea how to use them. Slow transitions. Very hot and crazy weather conditions for October. Event comments: I had a blast at this race and will be back next year. Hopefully the water levels will be up higher. I woke up at 7 this morning. We wanted to get to the race by 8:45 though our start time wasn't until 10:54. I had a bagel and a banana while we were getting the gear ready. After we set up the bikes, we walked down to Morgan's to get our canoes. En route, we got to walk down the killer hill that we would have to run up during the run portion.
I never really warmup. I had a power bar right before we hopped into the canoe.
