Swim
Comments: What an excellent swim! I cannot believe how well it went. I started to the outside and the current brought me to the buoy perfectly. It was then a quick shot down current to the pier. I cannot believe that pace, and it includes the T1 time as there was not eletronic timing at this race. What would you do differently?: Not a thing, except maybe try to figure out how to do that well every time! Transition 1
Comments: I forgot to hit my lap button on the way in to T1, but got it on the way out. The transition went very well - I jogged down the pier and then walked in transition to my bike. The wetsuit came off fine and I got a good start on the ride. What would you do differently?: Nothing. This is the first time I had energy to jog out of the water. Bike
Comments: I felt really good on the bike and I'm shocked that I did relatively better on the swim (10th age group and 52nd male) than on the bike (12th age group and 60th male)!! I was constantly passing others and was passed by about 1/2 dozen. There were a surprising number of people who were riding in the middle of the lane and also towards the double yellow. What would you do differently?: Nothing it was a great ride - only more traing would have improved it. Transition 2
Comments: Again, forgot to hit the lap button coming into T2. Because this is a shorter race than last weekend's oly and the trouble I had with my legs, I made a point to get my shoes on without sitting down, and opted to not wear socks. The transition went really well, although I almost forgot to synch up my shoes. I ate a hammer gel on the way out and washed it down with a cup of water at the station outside the transition area. What would you do differently?: Not sure, it was one of my better T2's. Run
Comments: The run is my worst event, but I actually passed a few people for the first time!! I kept waiting for my quads to feel like they would cramp, but it never came, so I kept trying to slowly pick up the pace. I actually had a little left to kick it in and hold off someone I could hear closing in. What would you do differently?: Pick up the pace a little sooner, and not run 18 miles two days before a sprint (but I have the Marine Corps Marathon coming up and I had an opportunity to run with someone!). Post race
Warm down: Polished off a gatorade, hit the port-o-john, and popped open a sam adams. Hung out with Steve (who took 3rd overall) and watched the rest of the gang come in. What limited your ability to perform faster: Limited amount of traing and not trying to run harder when I was feeling good. Event comments: After four olympic distance tri's over the last three years, doing my first sprint was very fun and a little easy. It was really fun doing the race with so many people I know. Had dinner with a bunch of old high school buddies (Steve, Paul, Mike, and Dave) and one of their neighbors (Ed) the night before. Got to bed kind of late because it took a while to get dinner. I took two Endurolytes pills before bed.
I told Steve about my cramping and all the salt on my body after last week's Oly Tri and he mentioned that I may be taking too many Endurolytes, so I didn't take any today. Had an Ensure for breakfast and a bottle of HEED in the transition area. No warmup.
