Swim
Comments: After getting kicked in the face to start, resetting my goggles, the swim was great for me. When I did the first turn my time was around 12 minutes. I was thinking I could get close to a 30 minute swim, which I had set as my ideal. Coming back down had to slow down for sighting, the sun made it difficult to find the next buoy. What would you do differently?: I was very happy with my swim, need to get away from people faster, always had someone around me, and either he or I wasn't swimming completely straight, because there would be contact every few minutes. Transition 1
Comments: Had previously setup flip-flops to get from water to transition, grabbed them and started running, then stopped to put them on. Stuffed down a gel, drank some, and used the time to reset. What would you do differently?: Decide on flip flops, use body glide, do the gel on the bike. Bike
Comments: Started out and went straight to the areo's. The flat course is great for putting your head down and going hard. Had 2 gels, and half a bottle of poweraid. Got a small cramp about half way through, needed to work it out so I could get a decent run. What would you do differently?: Drink more, eat less. Overall really enjoyed the bike. I had moved my seat into a more aero geometry, had not trained with this; not sure if it helped or hurt. Transition 2
Comments: This transition was good, again downed some fluids. What would you do differently?: Start to do more advanced transition techniques Run
Comments: The first mile was hard, more bricks in my future. Felt very bloated on the run, Every time I would try to speed up, the cramp would start to show its face. So I had to find a balance where I could go the whole 6.2 without the cramp. What would you do differently?: Run train all winter to improve base. More brick workouts. Figure out how to not get the bloated feeling. Post race
Warm down: Met up with family and friends. Consumed Cytomax, water, PBJ and banana. Enjoyed the massage. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bloating and stomach cramping, had to pull back to prevent it from getting worse Event comments: The mile markers where not on the course, and we were not given information that the water stations where at mile markers, this made it hard to pace. Got up at 4 AM and starting getting ready, Weetabix and a bagel for breakfast. This is my first ever race so I wanted to be early. Started heading down to DC around 5:30. I use to live in DC so I knew the area around the race well. Easily parked around Foggy Bottom and headed down Virginia Avenue to transition. The two races next to me didn't show up, so I had a ton of room all around me.
Light jog, and walking to get the blood flowing.
