Comments: Started out towards the back and got going at the gun. I felt really good the whole way and ended up passing a fair amount of people. I chatted with a few people and was having a good time. My run training has been down a bit so I thought I would have a slow time, but ended up bettering last years times in all areas. 24:05 is a pretty fast 5K for me so I was quite happy to see the results. What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Grass was wet so I decided to put bike shoes on in T1 instead of leaving them on pedals. What would you do differently?: Maybe run in socks but wet feet on a cold morning was not worth it. ![]() Bike
Comments: Felt really good starting out and throughout the bike. Passed a few people right away and then caught and stayed with two others. I figured they'd drop me when we got to the hills since they were skinny little people, but I hung with them. I felt so much better climbing the hills this year than last. It was tough but I wasn't totally exhausted. A credit to better bike training and my new bike! I took a gel at the beginning and end of the bike course and drank two bottles of water. I did end up getting passed by two guys towards the end of the bike. I was running out of gas a bit and having trouble keeping power. Tried to do some fast spinning as I got back into the park to get my run legs ready. Got shoes off feet and headed into T2. There is quite a long run from dismount line to timing mat at T2, was the same heading out onto the bike. This probably slowed my avg MPH down a tenth or two. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Shoes off feet while riding this time. Ran into T2 with socks figuring grass had a chance to dry out a bit. It was pretty dry. Event time has T2 at :16, don't think that's accurate. It was definitely faster than T1, maybe around :30. What would you do differently?: Nothing, it felt fast ![]() Run
Comments: Fairly uneventful second run. Legs were tight the first mile or so after the bike. I could probably benefit from some more bike/run bricks. I don't recall passing anyone but I did get passed by 3 or 4 people towards the end. One of them was a guy I knew a bit so we talked for awhile until I couldn't keep up and let him go. Tried to muster up a strong finish because there were one or two guys within catching distance. Just didn't have it in me and didn't really care to try that hard. I was just enjoying the race. What would you do differently?: I guess more bricks and run training in general. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Just did some walking around with bro and Dad and light stretching. Then went home and went to bed. What limited your ability to perform faster: Up all night at work Event comments: A great race with a fun laid back atmosphere. Supports SIDS, a great cause. I highly recommend this race. Worked 3rd shift, got off work and went straight to race venue. Arrived by 0800, got checked in and started to get ready. I was a little tired from working overnight but I was all caffeined up and ready to roll by start time.
Took the bike out for a spin. Mostly wanted to decide whether to wear shorts or pants. It was really cold in the morning, as low as 39 degrees, but it warmed up to over 50. I went with shorts and long sleeve shirt and it was the right decision. Took one gel shortly before the start of the race.
