Pre-race routine:

Breakfast when we woke up at 4:15. Packed everything up and got the fluids put together. We went to the T2 set-up at the Navy stadium prepared things there before heading down to the T1 set-up area on the busses provided. When we arrived down at T1 I got marked up and went to ste up for the transition. I waited awhile before putting on my wetsuit and simply hung out - catching up with Dan, Tim and a few others at the race. We were able to see the wives before the race which was great. I then proceeded to put on the wetsuit and head down to the dock....
Event warmup:

Nothing in particular - mentally thought about the race and got things organized.

--- Would have placed 182 overall without the 2-minute penalty.
Swim
  • 24m 1s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

First time I ever swam with the wetsuit and I must say when I entered the water I immediately felt the difference in terms of bouyancy. When the horn sounded I felt like I got a great start especially having positioned myself on the outside right of the group. I was able to fight my way through some of the arms, legs and bodies before the first turn and put myself in decent position for the duration of the swim. I was however, unable to swim with anyone for the entire race. My breathing for the first 300-400 yards was very difficult and I did feel pretty confined in the wetsuit. After that I was able to get a bit more comfortable in the suit and relaxed a bit which helped. My breathing was almost every stroke to the right side. I felt like I finished the swim strongly and exited the water feeling like I did pretty well. My time was fairly good however, I actually thought I had done a bit better in terms of per 100 yards especially since I thought the wetsuit would improve my time somewhat!
What would you do differently?:

Relax a bit....bilateral breathing(when I get better with that).....attempt to stay with others and possibly draft a bit......concentrate on longer, stronger strokes, basically being more efficient!
Transition 1
  • 03m 52s
Comments:

Once again I had a terrible Transition...I honestly think I am relaxing too much in the transition area and too particular about getting things organized and placed properly, just thinking about so many things that don't matter. I need to be mindful that the sole purpose is to get in and get out....throw it in the bag, put it on and get the hell out of there!

I ranked 581 out of 872.
What would you do differently?:

Everything!!!

Bike
  • 1h 06m 57s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.27 mile/hr
Comments:

Other than the fact I was charged with a ridiculous drafting penalty I felt like I rode fairly well. I continue to wonder what the difference would be if we were riding with Tri bikes instead of our rode bikes. I have to believe that it would make quite a difference...maybe that's just wishful thinking but I can't wait to find out.
What would you do differently?:

I think I may have pushed a bit harder at certain points of the race. I felt like I could have put forth a bit more throughout different parts of the race but who knows I may have then struggled even more with the run piece!
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Again I take entirely too long with the transition process....need to focus on getting in and getting out!

I ranked 355 out of 872.
What would you do differently?:

Do things faster!!!
Run
  • 49m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Definitely took me a bit to get comfortable with my stride coming off the bike however, i was able to get going eventually and actually began to enjoy the run about a half mile in. Definitely need to improve training so I am able to run more effectively...simply put faster for a longer period of time!
What would you do differently?:

I'd like to say push through some of the pain however, I am not sure what the result may have been.
I do know I will improve my training so I can perform much better next season!

Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit and went to get food and drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training!

Event comments:

Best race of the year and a great way to end the season. Looking forward to getting after it again with the training and making a marked improvement next season!

Course: Fairly flat run course for about the first 4 miles. Once we started heading up toward the bridge it was a gradual climb. My first 3 miles were pretty strong however, mile 4 and 5 were a bit of a struggle. The finish was fantastic coming into the stadium!
