Pre-race routine:

14 hrs befoer race start ate a salty homemade double pepperoni pizza and pepperoni & a sausage pizza with a fat tire. Woke up about 4:45am had a cup of coffee and a couple of fig newtons then went for a short run about 3/4 of a mile. Had some more coffe and a piece of toast with honey, just before we left the house at 6:30 had a protein smoothie. Got out to the lake got my chip, topped off the fluids, put the nutrition on the bike and filled the tires. about 7:30 at this point and went down towards the swim corral and saw Jim aka Akidoman talked with him and his new beautiful bride while I got my wet suit on and we went into the swim area. I started thinking about the swim and my strategy and watched as the wind kicked up and the white caps started to form. Looking at the swim buoys, it looked like taking a straight line out to the turn buoy was the shortest route, all of the orange buoys going out to it did a bananna and it looked longer to me. I took a short 3 or 4 minute swim out to the tires protecting the harbout and it looked like staying as close to those and shortuctting was the right move to make. Warmed up, plan in hand and ready to go.

When we took off I was trying to sight and with all the splashing plus the white chaps out by the turn buoy I ended up to far to the left of the line I wanted to take and the crowd was following the buoys. I ended up swiming most of that first section with no drafting at all. At the turn it was like woohoooooo the waves were pushing us and you could almost body surf that section of the course, I was able to draft a bit but wasn't a big deal at that point. Made the turn back to shore and that seemed to take a long time to get back in, the waves must have been pushing a little bit or some current. I ended up a little to the right of the swim exit so that took a few seconds longer to get back in.
What would you do differently?:

Try to do a better job sighting and keepin my line right off the bat, find easier to spot things to sight for the very start.

On this course I opted to put my shoes on in the changing room due to the long steep climb out of the marina. I was planning to put socks on as well but forgot until I almost had shoe #2 on, so blew it off (I alos had a pair of socks in my T2 bag).
What would you do differently?:

Put my socks on.

I really felt like I nailed the transition.

The course is brutal tough on a calm day and we had some pretty good winds. Dave Scott (gratutios name drop) said he couldn't believe how slow he was going on the false flat after the 3 sisters, like 6 to 10 mph. That made me feel pretty good. :)
What would you do differently?:

I felt I biked as well as I could that day.

They had bike catchers, as I was coming to the dsmount line, I yelled "where's the Tyler Hamilton line". I was seriously hoping that when I stepped off the bike my legs would work and wouldn't fall on my face. All systems go got to the changing tent and my personal assistant handed me my bag, socks on no problem shoes grabbed a a bottle of water and out I went, and what a pleasant surprise, there was Ryan to run me out the first few yards. What a great pick me up!!!!

Felt good until I turned up the hill on Carnagee around mile 6 or so and the legs began to hurt, quads and hammies. Beautiful run lots of spectators on the whole run course.

Warm down:

Pam aka VegasDiver had a cooler full of Fat Tire waitng for me and I had one o dem. Watched some other BT'ers and a few others come across the finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mostly my lack of bike training, I did just about what I predicted. I think if I had better bike leggs it would allow me to perform better on the run as well. My legs hurt from the very first pedal stroke and well, quite frankly they still do, 2 days later.

Next year I am proclaming it the year of the bike, my goal will be to increase bike speed by 15 to 20 percent.

Event comments:

I say it was too hard but that was what I liked about it, I'm glad the wind picked up or it would have been too easy. :)

This is by far the most organized race of any kind I've attended. Volunteer ratio was like 3 vols to 1 athlete. I skipped several of the bike water stations and skipped half of the run buffets as well, so yeah, I guess there was pleanty of liquid and food on the course.

HR didn't work most of the bike, it really didn't bother me that much.
