Run
Comments: Started too fast. Felt OK for first 2 loops and first mile or so of 3rd. Then pain really set in. Mud made it very difficult to make progress, and required lots of extra muscle work. Had hydration vest so didn't need to stop at aid stations (though I did for Pepsi on last lap). Could barely get shoes/socks changed after 2nd loop because laces were frozen with ice and mud. What would you do differently?: Start much slower. Post race
Warm down: None. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mud! Fatigue/pain in hip flexors (also some in groin, butt, calf). Event comments: I don't know about this ultra stuff. I guess I typically feel this way after marathons too, so we'll see in a few days or weeks, but that was painful! It's hard to tell how much better I might have felt and performed without the mud and with a slower start. The first 2 loops were OK considering some significant but probably wise pit stops, but the 3rd was rough. Last updated: 2007-10-17 12:00 AM
