Pre-race routine:

Got up 30 min before departure, ate a mini-Clif bar en route.
Event warmup:

Did ~10 min. of arm circles waiting for wave, then 50 yd stretching warmup lap in pool.

Comments:

Just a fun, semi-gym-based triathlon, so the pool swim was fun and easy. I did the super-cool move of the day--when trying to pass the person in front of me, there was another person coming down the lane, so I just swam straight for that person, then dove underneath. That caused some stir! The oncoming swimmer, however, was my training buddy Dolores, so I knew she would be unfazed.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. If this were a standard triathlon, I would have pushed the swim more (and I say this about every triathlon, so in general ... push the swim more). Oh, and maybe not lose count. I may have done 550 yd, who knows.

Comments:

I thought the run was going to be on a treadmill, so it was a pleasant surprise to have an outdoor course. Unfortunately, this means I am going to get lost.

I did something I have not done in years, and did not think I was capable of doing: I ran about 4 miles straight through, no walk breaks. I think that, and the 2nd half of the course being downhill, made for a stellar PR, perhaps more so stellar dep/up how far I got lost.

Part of it may also have been that I didn't eat enough yesterday, nor this morning, and I lost most of my vision and got very foggyheaded during the 2nd half of the run. This happens if I'm overstressed/overtired/underfed/overexerting and then I get a migraine (which did indeed happen later). Those were overarching factors ... the only thing I could have done better was eat more on the bike, but I really wasn't hungry. May have also been the dirty air--it's better now, but not good.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think I am going to develop a better sense of direction anytime soon, so ... nothing, I guess. Not push it at all on a tri, treat it as an easy workout, if I'm not doing well beforehand.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for 10 minutes, then did a yoga class.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not knowing I was going to be doing this until about 9 hours before. :) A very stressful, underslept, underfed week. Oh, and I did a 4-mile run in this nasty smoky outdoor weather the night before. Things like that.

Event comments:

This triathlon was free. You got free things. Everything after was free. And it was actually really good! What's not to like?

Course: A first for me! A 55-minute spin class was the bike segment of the tri ... and although I work for the Spinning(R) people (Mad Dogg Athletics), I've never actually attended a class! It was okay. I don't think I caught the fever. Super-cool class as they go; it was taught by a pro triathlete and co-owner of the gym, fantastic music and a large-screen TV playing footage of Ironman something-or-other, but I didn't dig it. I did do most of the hills and sprints, though.
