Swim
Comments: Compared to last year when I was 230/280 in the swim the is a huge improvement of 3min. Probably what helped my overall time the most. Only passed 2 people but was only passed 1 time. I notice a few people get in the water early who were getting passed alot so obviously the gave bogus times. I gave a slightly faster time but think I pretty well. Did not want to kill myself in the water or could have gone a little faster. Because of the stager there was no drafting. I got passed with about 30mtrs to go so I tried to hang on his feet till the end. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Maybe go alittle harder. Transition 1
Comments: Put on arm warmers which I think now I could have lived without. Probably cost me close to a minute. Also this was my first race (2nd overall attempt) at the running with shoes on bike thing. Almost forgot as I got to the mount line as my hands were in the wrong position but I got set and away I went. What would you do differently?: Not wear arm warmers even though they were nice to have on. Bike
Comments: Considering I bought my bike 5 weeks (5 rides maybe) before the race last year I would think my time would be better than last year but it was basically the same. I know in a year my cycling has improved espcially in distance but not really in speed. I could have gone harder but don't know how that would have affected my run. Not really much passing, maybe passed 6 people but was only passed by 1 person. I even managed to pass the 6th person into the water on lap 1. What would you do differently?: Go harder (maybe). Transition 2
Comments: This is probably one of my best transition ever. Helmet off, shoes on, grabbed hat and gloves and took off. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Last year was 24:20 and I did not think I could be that by much. I was really hoping for sub 24:00 but with bricks I was doing recently was not convinced. Heading onto the run I felt really good. HR was high but I did not really care. The only reason I had the monitor on was I like numbers. My goal was to get as close to puking as possible. As I started I really did not see anyone around me. Did see a few people and set out to catch them. Thought I was starting too fast so I slowed down a bit but realized I felt great so pushed. Started seeing the leaders so I started couting people just to see where I was at. New this did not matter with the type of start but did it anyways. Got to the turn around and was 15th which felt pretty cool. Passed 1 more person so down to 14th nearing the finish and kept pushing. All of a sudden I hear footsteps and get passed like I am standing still with about .25miles to go. I know there is no way I am keeping up with this guy. Nearing the finish I go as hard as I can. I am running sub 7 pace. Cross the finish line and know I had a great day compared to last year. I feel like I am going to puke so I am happy. I still know that I could have gone harder though. What would you do differently?: This is probably the 2nd or 3rd fastest 5K I have ever run, stand alones included, so I am extremely happy but know I could have probably gone harder. Post race
Warm down: Tried not to puke. Ate a pancake and talked to other BTer's. What limited your ability to perform faster: Cold weather. Event comments: DA puts on good races but I was actually disappointed with this race. First of all they reused old race numbers so it looks like I did the Disco Tri and my son did Iceman the day before. Plus you really did not know awards was going on since they had the music blaring. They should have coordinated this better. Plus the awards were pretty flimsey but they were the same as last year. Basically they gave away painted styrafoam tombstones. Look pretty cool IMO, but just felt cheap. Alot of people who got them were walking away waving them with the look how light they are. But I will take my first Tri Hardware. This is basically the 1 year anniversary from my first tri so I will mention along the way things where I learned from last year etc. My goal for this race was to see how much better I got in a year. Last year total time was just over 1:13 so my goal was under 1:10 (conservatively).
Woke up at 5:30. Loaded car and grabbed breakfast. Had 2 poptarts and a speciel K bar. Not really the best breakfast but I forgot to go shopping and that was all I could find to eat. I was not too worried though.
Got to the race site right when transition was suppose to open and there was already alot of people. Luckily they changed it to open rack which was a great idea since the pool start was based on est time. Last year the racks were assigned based on swim times so the racks were all very crowed exiting the swim. I knew this change would be nice.
Hung out and did what I do best, talked.
