Pre-race routine:

Up at 6:15. Bathroom, etc. Ate bowl of Kashi GoLean with soy milk and a banana. I had laid out all of my stuff the night before so getting dressed was pretty quick.

We arrived earlier than I have ever arrived at this race and it was great. We got there about 8am for a 9am start. When I got there, it looked like they had not yet started letting the timed racers up in the forward section and the pace markers were not yet set. I was able to stand up next to the 8min/mi pace marker. And when they made the announcement, a lot of people who were untimed runners/walkers moved out of the timed runner area, which meant less people to dodge after the start.
Event warmup:

With all the people, it helped to get the temperature warmed up from its 45-50 degrees or so. At about 10 min to race time I started jumping and lifting my legs up one by one. There wasn't really any room to warm up with over 25,000 participants there.

Comments:

Yet again, I wasn't properly trained for this race, but I knew I could finish and probably PR. It was tough, though. I felt like I pushed harder than I ever had before, and my form was suffering as the race went on.

The first mile is partially spent dodging other people but after that, things thin out. I was feeling pretty good for the first 3 miles, but as you can see by my splits, my times dropped off consistently. As the race went on, I had to push harder and harder.

I walked a couple times. The first time, as soon as I took my first walking step, another Sac Tri Club member was right behind me (I was wearing my Sac Tri Club jersey) and said, "Looking good, Sac Tri. Let's go!" and I started running again. The second time, no one was watching and I walked for 30 seconds or so.

I had my own bottle of water so I didn't have to rely on the aid stations, which I think helps my time, and I can have a drink whenever I want it. I didn't finish the 24oz bottle though, and even if I had, it probably wouldn't have been enough, knowing my sweat rate.

The course itself is nice. Midtown is a nice part of town -- nice homes and trees. There were a good number of people watching and cheering. There were a couple of live bands on the course as there has been every year, and just like every year, they sucked. The band at the finish line is good, though.

My wife, my mother-in-law, and a friend all walked the 5k together. I passed them at about mile 5 after the 5k and 10k courses converged again (but the 5k'ers stay on one side of the road while the 10k'ers are on the other). I met up with them again at the finish line. They said, and this was confirmed by my other friend who tried to race the 5k, that there were so many people on the 5k, you were pretty much forced to walk slowly.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Maintain my form. Work on my pacing to keep my splits even. But can't complain too much about a PR!
Post race
Warm down:

After getting my chip removed from my shoe and wondering if I was going to puke (which I didn't), I walked over to the expo area and got a couple energy bars, a banana, and an electrolyte drink. Hung out and listened to the band at the finishing line. Stretched a little on the way back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training. Extra weight.

Event comments:

This race is a lot of fun but there are so many people, if you are concerned with PR'ing, you might be a little frustrated. The course is nice and the race is well run. It's for a great cause and a great way to start the Thanksgiving day.
