Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:30am mom, pop and brother got up. Had a bagel with peanut butter and a bananna. Got the transition bag and lubed the bike up and put it in the van. Off to the race by 4am. Put in the brothers iPod and just tried to relax, then after driving half-way there I remembered that I forgot my gel packets and was about to say oh well, but my father dropped me off at the race and went back to the house and got them. (They were in the fridge cause hot GU is nasty gu)

Race opened at 5:07am(they said 5....) anyway so I set my transition up, used the port-o-johns quite to many times(I was fine by the race). Also walked each transition and went through it in my mind as I normally do. Put electrical tape around the end of my row(YES THAT WAS ME!!) which always turns out to my advantage :)

I will also say I feel like I was way to relaxed for this race.

Got in line for the bus at 6:30 and didn't get on the bus til 6:47 and then headed over to the swim start. Went straight into the line to wait for the port-o-john and finally went. tried to go do a swim warmup and then when I walked down there everyone was kicked out of the water(saying it was unsafe to warmup because nobody was watching us)...
Event warmup:

Went for a quick 1.5mile run about and then came back and stretched in the grass away from everyone.
Swim
  • 22m 17s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started all the way on the left and again worked to my advantage as I knew I drift right when I swim so in doing so I started left and ended up as I was aiming at the right of the brdige in the arch. I drafted also quite a bit and I am almost positive I caught up with 2 waves infront of me. also used an idea from Kona that was said to breath on both sides if you get tired from one side, which I did and worked even better and after about 4-5 breaths from the left side as I breathe off the right that I was able to get my stroke back into form and stretch and pull farther.
What would you do differently?:

1. put a little more power in the end as I felt I had more in me to swim harder at the end of the swim
2. Always could draft more.
3. Not stop to check my watch
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

I fell trying to get on my bike....yay me...

it was quite a run as the race was so big, but I also had a better time taking the wetsuit off so I was happy with that but overall I can always be faster.
What would you do differently?:

1. Practice getting on my bike even if I look stupid in a park doing it.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 35s

  • 21.12 mile/hr
Comments:

A really nice course and passed quite a bit of people, safely and more not so safe(sorry to all). I was just trying to make up the time I lost from falling over. 8 hills over the whole course and they were somewhat steep and long except lemon hill.

Hit I think as high as 35mph on some parts of the course and was climbing around a sad pace of like 13mph and even less then that.

My back was also hurting when riding so I need to get refitted for my bike for a better aero position.

After losing one of my water bottles and I had also drank everything to I though that gatorade would help me....bad idea as I felt like I had to throw up towards the end of the bike.

Overall Pretty satisfied with the ride and again always room for improvement.
What would you do differently?:

1. work on hills since there are really none in virginia.

2. Get re-fitted for my bike.

3. Somehow secure the water bottles on the back of my bike so they don't fall off the hydro-tail
Transition 2
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Wasn't sure If I could take my helmet off before I got to my rack so I racked the bike and put on the shoes and almost forgot to take the helmet off.
What would you do differently?:

1. Take helment off earlier.

2. Was smooth transition but always room for improvement.

Run
  • 49m 6s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I tried to smile as much as I could and I think it helped me run and concentrate of form. Was aiming for under 50min and did it so now improvement on my run is next.

Overall had an awesome run though.
What would you do differently?:

1. Push myself more at the end of the race as it was downhill

Post race
Warm down:

drank water and went straight to going home as I had a 5 hour drive from Philadelphia to Norfolk, VA

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More training overall. I was happy with everything.

Event comments:

Great race for me, good baseline for me so now its time to buckle down and improve the 3 disciplines.

1. Not stop nomatter what when swimming.
2. Get bike fixed and then re-fitted for a better aero position
3. Figure out a way to secure water bottles on read hydration
4. add 1 gel for every 25min
5. practice getting on bike at T1
6. Run and push self at end of race

Overall I had a great race, had alot of fun and wished I could of seen the awards ceremony but I had to get going.
