Swim
Comments: Due to thunderstorms rolling in, the sprint started much earlier than planned (at least 1/2 hour if not more) and the entire sprint field started as one wave. Strong wind, lots of chop, and a herd of people all over the place. What would you do differently?: Without being an a-hole and intentionally swimming over people, nothing I could have done (during the race) would have made a difference. I Can't effectively swim on my back when it's pouring down rain. Actually going to swim practice would be a great place to start. Transition 1
Comments: wasn't expecting rain so I didn't take anything to weatherproof my stuff - oops. This year I didn't run all the way up the hill from the swim so I had more energy and wasn't completely out of breath when I got to the top, however by doing that my T1 time was longer. What would you do differently?: find something that is rainproof, yet still easy to get to gear without a lot of zipping, untying, fighting with plastic bags, etc. I took half of what I took last year and I think next year I should be able to take even less (to the field). Bike
Comments: Equipment failure: *Couldn't keep bike in gear! Back gears jumping all over the place once they got wet, and while using the front big ring wasn't a picnic either, it was worse trying to get out of it. Not happy with the bike today. *Water bottle clogged and I had to physically stop & deal with it. --had there been any gatorade/water station open during the ride I wouldn't have bothered, but the rain didn't allow that to happen. Tried to take advantage of downhill sections and ignore the wet pavement factor. I had that stupid blue fish from "Nemo" stuck in my head saying her "just keep swimming, swimming, swimming" as I came down the last leg of the bike. I felt like I did well, until I saw the race results :( What would you do differently?: really need to practice my mounts/dismounts with SPD's. Dry and wet land. *Ride in the rain more, get used to rain stinging eyes. *Don't assume early year bike adjustment will carry over from race to race. *check both attached Equipment and carried Eq several times before race day Transition 2
Comments: Wet Wet Wet! didn't feel like running when I got off the bike, but didn't have the super-rubbery-leg thing going either. Running shoes had standing water in them so I didn't bother changing socks. What would you do differently?: try to run with bike a little more - maybe put "Rain X" on my glasses?? Run
Comments: Shins hurt about 1/2 mile in, stopped and briefly stretched legs which seemed to help immensely. O.K. run, chatted a little longer on the way back than I should have with another runner, slowed my time down by probably 2 minutes. *shrug* What would you do differently?: Ignore everyone else and just focus on plodding along at my pace and my breathing. Post race
Warm down: 1/4 mile walk back to Jeep. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training, weather. Event comments: Good Event overall. Already planning for next year :) This was my first Triathlon in the rain.. It was harsh, but it brought the air temp down and felt oh-so-good on the run. Last updated: 2007-11-03 12:00 AM
