Swim
Comments: SLOW SLOW SLOW. Time for swim lessons as I really put in some hours training for the swim and thought I would have done it in 48 minutes or perhaps even better on race day. What would you do differently?: Train faster instead of volume based. Did not swim straight and had to keep correcting. I should have just same the breast stroke in a straight line and probably would have finished in the same or even quicker with more energy. Transition 1
Comments: Peelers where available which worked great. The run to where my bike was racked was very long and hard on the feet. What would you do differently?: Check out where the peelers where going to be before the race so that I would not have ended up with burrs all over my tri-shorts and bike jersey (I wore it under my wet suit). Also would have kept tennis shoes near the swim exit to save on my feet and run quicker. Bike
Comments: I missed the 1st water/acclerade station and on the 2nd one ended up getting only accelerade when I wanted only water. Took 4-gel packs which was about right. What would you do differently?: Pushed fluids more. Transition 2
Comments: This went well. What would you do differently?: Run faster with the bike Run
Comments: The run went well considering I was having problems with my IT band the last few weeks (since Denver 1/2 marathon in October). I started out slower than I wanted to which paid off as my IT band did not start to bother me until mile 10. Slowed pace down which helped until the last mile and was about to stop/walk but saw my Family which really helped. I was able to sprint in the last 0.1mile. What would you do differently?: Would have avoided Denver 1/2 one month prior as I train/live in Florida and the few hills on the course, the cold 41 degrees, and running a PR lead to the ITB problem. Post race
Warm down: Met family, brent and friends and tried to drink water, but they were only handing out flavored water (lemon-lime and mandarin orange) which was horrible. Did not feel like eating so pushed fluids on the ride home and ate later. What limited your ability to perform faster: IT band. TOO much accelerade on the bike which made me really nauseated and had to choke down vomit the 1st 3-4 miles on the run. Only drank water on the run with one gel-pack which corrected the problem by the 2nd loop. Event comments: Pizza (not very good), no more hot dogs or hamburgers when I finished. Checked in Saturday around 1 and hung out at Expo while friend (Draught) volunteered. Pasta and salad for dinner. Went to bed at 8pm. Woke up at midnight and tossed/turned till 3am when Brent had to get up to volunteer. Ate some pancakes, banana, water and laid down until 5am. Got organized and walked from campground to transition.
1 mile walk to transition.
