Swim
Comments: Course was great but conditions were the worst I have seen in 14 years. I started swimming and couldn't breathe the water was that cold. Everytime I took a breathe I got smashed by a wave and swallowed water. If I didn't have a wetsuit, I would have drowned! This is not my best leg and it was my 1st Olympic Distance race, despite all this my swim wasn't tooooo bad. What would you do differently?: More open water swimming and generally more swimming training in general. Maybe some lube under my wetsuit, I got some serious chaffing in 2 places. Don't drink salt water, its not good for you. Transition 1
Comments: Transitions have always been a good thing for me, always nice and smooth. I use a bright towel so I know where my bike is. What would you do differently?: Probably nothing. Bike
Comments: On my first lap, my cleat came loose on my shoe, not something I generally check before a race. After fixing my shoe it took me 2 laps to get into a rhythm. After the swim, I hurt in the stomach, probably from drinking too much salt water. The rest of the bike went well, found it a little hard in the head wind. What would you do differently?: Include my cleats as part of my pre-race check up. Transition 2
Comments: Again all good here, if only the rest of my race went this well. Run
Comments: By the time I hit the run I had turned this race into a training event. I started running ok, but kept getting caught by this old guy, I figured I was not going to redeem myself here, so I may as well keep him company. What would you do differently?: I did find the run fairly easy, but I didn't exactly go hard out. Post race
Warm down: Lunch at Barbados followed by a few post-race drinks. What limited your ability to perform faster: Making the move from Sprint to Olympic, I took this race a bit too easy as I didn't want to burn out. I felt great physically afterwards. Event comments: It is one of the best venues I have raced, I will be back next year with a time to smash to bits. Last updated: 2007-11-11 12:00 AM

Most of my pre-race routine was done the day before, going over the course many times and staying hydrated. My golden rule when competing is "Know thy course".
No real warm-up, just lots of stretching.
