Pre-race routine:

Ate a slice of 12-grain toast w/PB, a bowl of oatmeal, a glass of juice, and a 'nanner. Drank about 22 oz. of Pre-race InfinIT on the way to Lake Mills. No beer yet.

Event warmup:

Stayed warm! There was a bit of a breeze, but with me having very little body mass I was getting cold too quickly.
I was one of the very first participants to show up, so I had prime parking (okay, it's a tiny venue, but still!!)
Saw Amyjo first and we talked for awhile. It was quite awhile before I some other Donks. TriDDS's 1st son saw me and ran up to me, then I saw the BIG guy w/his Mom and baby boy (Luke is starting to fill out his cheeks!), and finally his wife tri-n-spin (Jeanne). A little later I saw Travis and Sandi. A couple of my local town lady friends showed up, too. Jamie, who was my 2nd son's Kindergarten teacher, was running the 4-miler, and Robyn was running the 1/2 Mary.
With about less than 30 minutes to go before the start of the 1/2 Mary, more people were still arriving to register for the race and getting in the long line (registration was supposed to be done at 11:00 a.m.).
I coaxed Amyjo to move her car from the original parking spot to a different spot, since where she parked she would have had to wait until the last runner would complete the race before she could leave.
With about 15 minutes before the start of the race, I did a warm-up jog, and some stretching (to stay warm more than anything).
Prior to the gun going off, I positioned myself near the back and started jumping up and down and yelling "EEEEEAAAAAWWWWWWWWW" and "MOREY" to find him. I think he ignored me! (actually, he couldn't hear me above the noise from the music blaring from the speakers). A number of participants around me were looking me like I was a nut. Oh, well.

Comments:

Took off too fast for the first 3 miles, and slowly winded down after that. Walked partly up one of the steeper hills and walked about 5 or 6 times later in the race to catch my breath and lower the HR.
Enjoyed the course and the scenic area along the lake.
The bottom of my feet started hurting by the 7 mile mark. I believe that the Brooks racing flats I was wearing were attributing to that. I'm considering on using those shoes for shorter distances now.
Between 5 and 10 miles I kept working off a side-stitch on my left side, below the rib cage, by doing the exaggerated diaphragm breathing technique. They didn't disappear for the longest time.
The last 3 miles I started to feel the burn in my legs and would switch between a slow jog and a brisk run when I started to feel better.
With about 400 to 300 yards to go, I saw Jamie and she was cheering me on, then she asked if I saw Robyn, which I didn't.
With about 200 yards to go and before I made the left turn onto Owen Drive (before the entrance into the Tyranena parking lot and finish line), I easily spotted Travis and started my sprint. I gave Travis a high-five (with him being 6'5" and me being 6'2-1/2", it wasn't hard) and pushed it more. The legs were hurting, but kicked it the final 50 yards.
What was cool was seeing the other Donks (from what I remember - Chris, Deanna, Amyjo) braying at me after I came in. FUN NEEEEE!!! That brought a smile on my face.
What would you do differently?:

DON'T START OUT AS FAST!
Post race
Warm down:

After crossing the finish line, there was a long wait to hand in the timing chip and for getting a mylar blanket, so my legs started to stiffen up some. It took almost 10 minutes before I got into the food tent (less than 20 feet to enter), hand in my chip, and receive my finisher's medal. The finisher's medal is unique because I think it's made of pottery clay. It's big, different, and (to me anyways) cool.
I grabbed a cookie and a tiny water, and met up with Jamie. A couple of minutes later, Robyn came in. I met up with Da' Donks and Donkettes. I went back to the van, put on some additional sweats and my IM Moo jacket, grabbed my 2 free beer tickets and did a "cool-down" jog and stretched for a couple minutes. I went back to the tent, met up with Da' Donks, and grabbed my beer!
Because I had a date with my wife later, I didn't get my free lasagne dinner (more room for the beer, too).
It was fun shooting the breeze with everyone, and finally meeting Morey.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Started out too fast, and needed a month more of some longer distance training days. Very strange that I wasn't as focused to run faster to get to the beer quicker. Need to evaluate that. ;)

Event comments:

The race was organized, but they really needed to have some additional help at the end to keep the line moving.
Also, maybe some additional help was needed to keep the BEER line moving a little quicker, too!
I'm thinking that the tent needed to be bigger to handle the crowd.
Overall - a very nice day, a fun run, and always fun to meet some good people - my fellow Donks and Donkettes! EEEAAAWWWWW!!!

Age Group: 161/246
Overall: 221/480
Performance: Average
Course: Mostly blacktop/asphalt on open roads, and a 1/3 of the race was run on a well-groomed, very flat, gravel trail (Glacier Drumlin). The route had some nice rollers and a couple of short, steeper hills, but nothing daunting. What's nice about this course is that it finishes at the Tyranena brewery parking lot, with a short walk to the BEER tent!! Woohoo!
