Pre-race routine:

Upon awaking and looking out the window at the snow coming down I then noticed the thermometer read about 15 degrees and I wondered do I really want to do this? But I have committed to myself to run some of these charity races and some of the freezaroo races just to get outside and off the dreadmill this winter. So I proceeded with the normal routine of breakfast and coffee. I then went and picked up Dexter and we made the slippery drive up to Brighton, normally about a 30 minute drive but it was closer to 45 with the snow covered roads. We got signed in, took the goodie bag to the car and put on the race number. Went back into the school to hit the mens room. We found Heather and looked for Marmadaddy but no sign of him yet.
Event warmup:

Walked out to the start line, did some stretching and a little jogging. Tried to stretch out a bit but the shivering created a slight coordination problem. Marmadaddy found us at the start line and team raBTit was complete!

Comments:

I started moving when the crowd did. I tried to start the garmin when I thought I crossed the start line but apparently I double clicked it. At about .5 mile I turned to Dexter after looking at my watch and said there was no way we were running a 7:17 mile and we weren't. It was here I realized I had started and stopped the watch. So I turned it on and it showed mid 8's. After a mile or so I finally started to warm up and felt loose so I picked up the pace and continued to move up through the field. After we left the main road we were running on snow or ice so footing became an issue through the residential area, especially along the curbs and in the corners as there were wet leaves under the snow. I was actually impressed I never saw anyone stumble.

According to the garmin which only had the last 2.7 miles, the first mile was at an 8:19 pace, second mile at 8:07 and the .7 was at 7:46 so I think had I warmed up a little better and pushed harder I had a little more in the tank. But considering I had only ran a bit since Harrisburg Marathon and none of it was more than Z2 pace I was happy with the outcome. I was impressed with my running condition in the last 12 months! Last year I ran 25:46 which was only 3 seconds slower, but last year it about killed me to do that time and today it felt like an easy training run! It seemed really short too. It was over in no time!
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I wasn't looking or expecting more from this run. I should probably think about getting some trail shoes or at least something with a little deeper tread for running in the snow.
Post race
Warm down:

Cheered in some of the runners still on the course. We then got our group together inside to warm up and get some water and hot chocolate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe the weather a little and not training specifically for this distance.

Event comments:

God bless the volunteers out on the course. At least we were running and building some body heat. Those poor folks had to stand and direct traffic and hand out ice cubes. They had to be freezing!!!!
