Pre-race routine:

Slept in (for me any way) till 6. Woke up without the aide of an alarm due to the noon race start (nice). Ate pancakes, a glass of skim milk, and sipped a bottle of cytomax while getting dressed. Packed and left to start the 2 hour drive the race. Got pulled over on the way to the race. This was pretty comical since I very seldom drive over the speed limit. Fortunately for me the cop gave me the break after asking about the US Army Retired sticker on my truck. I thanked him graciously, and went on my way. Cops, I love those guys!....hard job ....and everybody hates them until they need one.....Not me. Still arrived in plenty of time.
Event warmup:

Picked up my race number, said hello to Matt and Sarah R. and then jogged for about 15 minutes. Also ran into Mindy and her husband and chatted for a few.

Comments:

Course was much more technical than I figured it would be. Although there were no major elevation changes, the course was very hilly, with multiple short steep climbs throughout. Short steep downhills were also plentiful. Fallen leaves added some additional treachery to the stumps, erosion trenches, roots and infinate number of fist sized boulders.
It was pretty obvious that I went too fast on the first lap, since I could not get my HR below 165. So I decided to slow way down, lower my HR to the 150-155 range. Once I did this I slowly increased my pace. I never really established a goal but thought I should be able to run it in under 2 hours (My usual half time is in the mid 1:40s. But that wasn't to be today. I was surprised to find that I was 3rd in my AG.
What would you do differently?:

Not start so fast. Wear my Vasque's for better stability instead of my PI Trail shoes.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked for a few to cool down. Stretched my legs, then changed into warmer clothes since it drizzled, the temperature dropped into the high 30s about three quarters through the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. Hey, it's a trail run, they're hard.

Event comments:

Great race. Thanks to the Marines that volunteered to support the race! Great job! (Even if they are part of the Navy ha..ha....)
