Total Time = 2h 45m 8s
Overall Rank = 202/718
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 11/57
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45am. Dressed and had a banana and two Ensure Plus for a total of about 800 calories. (Will try a 1/2 a bagel next time..it took a while for my stomach to settle in. Glad for the late race wave.)
Event warmup:

Short run to work off the nerves while waiting for 9:00am start. Then a VERY short warm up swim just to see if I had any niggles in my shoulders. Happily I felt pretty good. Then stood around for 45 min freezing.
Swim
  • 20m 44s
  • 1056 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not sure if this course was 1056 or 965 but either way I was happy with the way I felt. I didn't push but didn't go into alligator cruise mode either. I also was able to draft here and there and had a good sight swim compared to what I normally do.

I could push harder on this but I don't think the energy expended is worth the cost. That or I'm just making excuses and lazy. Hmmmm...
What would you do differently?:

Took my pre-race gu a little early but it didn't seem to affect anything. Next time wait a little closer. I'll need it for longer distances.
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

I was on the other end of the transition area for this T1 and had a ways to run. Over shot my transition area but it didn't cost me too much.
What would you do differently?:

Mark my spot better.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 8s
  • 28 miles
  • 19.50 mile/hr
Comments:

My cadence sensor decided to poop out on me so I just based everything on speed and PRE. I think the race wheels really helped too. I don't think I've ever done 19.5 even at home on the flats.

First/Last two miles were really crappy roads but it gave you a chance to spin and recover from the swim and get ready for the bike.

What would you do differently?:

Take a gu 15 minutes before going into T2. Everything else was perfect.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Great T2 for me. As this is usually longer than my T1 due to putting my socks on but things went well. Except my stupid Garmin took forever to link up but I finally got it working just to give me my HR and pace.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 55m 1s
  • 6.5 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

OUCH!..It usually takes me three miles to loosen up and this time was no different but my lower legs were really tight and I couldn't push through that until they were ready. I also should have stuck to my run/walk plan but everytime I'd convince myself to walk someone else in my AG would pass me and piss me off. :) It wasn't till mile 5 that I was able to turn it over but when I did I took off. It was awesome!!
What would you do differently?:

More brick training. Gu 15 before I get off of bike. As I waited 15 min into the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Iced my legs, massage, food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pre-season injuries and training..

Event comments:

Check out Endorfun Sports. Keith's races are EXCELLENT!!! I was very impressed and will definitely be back for this and other races. I wasn't going to do Longhorn but I think I'll find a spot in the race schedule now. :)

Course: We really lucked out here. During my workouts we would have a tail and head wind but race day it was pretty easy. I kept thinking on the way out I had the wind with me and was expecting it to be hard coming back but it wasn't any harder coming back either. First/Last two miles were really crappy roads but it gave you a chance to spin and recover from the swim and get ready for the bike. This is mainly an out and back course. I thought it would get too crowded with the Qtr and HIM participants but it was really spread out nicely.
