Pre-race routine:

Threw my stuff in the car and ate whole wheat pita with Peanut butter, and drank a bottle of water. When I got there, (around 530AM) I checked in and set up my stuff in transition. They were announcing at 6:20 that buses were leaving to the swim start and that people in the first waves (me) should be on the first few buses. So I got on the 2nd or 3rd bus.
Event warmup:

Jumped in the river and swam a little. And was surprised at how calm I felt in the water. Tht's all the warmup I did.
Swim
  • 47m 19s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was the BEST swim I've had so far in a race. I started with freestyle with one-sided breathing until i got warmed up. Then I tried to do bilateral breathing when I could. at one point I stopped and emptied my goggles that were leaking and realized I had someone drafting me. ME! wow. that means I was being at least consistent. Anyway I stayed away from most of the other swimmers and did my thing.
What would you do differently?:

I made some good progress with my OWS. I just need to get FASTER.
Transition 1
  • 04m 58s
Comments:

I haven't really tried to optimize my time with transitions yet. Logistically everything went fine. I just am slow here!
Took a gel before jumping on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

focus on moving faster
Bike
  • 1h 29m 28s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.67 mile/hr
Comments:

I started strong with my ride. I even went into aero position in the beginning, but found that my stomach hurt. So, I stayed in the hoods or the drops when could.
My chain fell off at the end of the first hill on my second loop. I know exactly why it happened; I used the granny gear and had my back gear all the way to the left. Need to get the back gear to the middle before popping into the middle gear up front.
Stopping to fix the chain ended up making me nauseous. I got through the next hill ok but then before hitting lemon hill my issue was relieved..... was good to go after that.
What would you do differently?:

I felt ok with this ride, although i wish my pace were faster. the upset stomach slowed me down a little. also I NEED TO DO HILLS
Transition 2
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

Normal transition for me. My legs were tight though. Tried to run with the bike when I could. Logistically everything went fine.
What would you do differently?:

go faster !
Run
  • 1h 22m 44s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

I think in the future I will be able to KILL this run. But I was worn out and ended up run/walking the whole thing. I'd only let myself walk 0.1 mile at a time if I did walk.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get stronger with running; also bricks to get used to the jelly-leg feeling after biking
Post race
Warm down:

Found my friends and sister's family, and basked in my success of finishing my first Oly!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am in the best shape of my life right now. But not the lowest weight. I do triathlons to manage & lose weight. I need to continue with weight loss to increase my athletic ability.

Event comments:

This was a well-run race. I had no problems with any of the logistics around the swim start or where to go at any time. There were plenty of water stations. I'd definitely do this race again!
