Pre-race routine:

woke up at 3:40 AM. finished packing stuff from the night before. went downstairs to eat a banana and light bulb burnt out so had to replace that. carried the doggie outside which was useless since he didnt do anything. loaded up shark bait and off i went. met scott at speedway, got a nice cup of cappachino then stopped and picked up my friend.
Event warmup:

walked around alot and talked with peeps, 'specially all the donkeys!! went for a short run then got ready for the swim.
Swim
  • 08m 50s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was NERVOUS about this swim since i havent done alot (ok, almost none) of swimming in the past few months............so stayed over to the right and in back of the wave. started off and was feeling good and was just focusing on an even rhythm with bilateral breathing, all while making sure i was drifting to far to the right. only time that i took my head out of the water was when i passed (yes i was actually passing people on the swim!!!) a guy floating along on a noodle.......i thought at first i had drifted out past the lifeguards but he was in the middle of the pack of swimmers. odd i thought, next time im using a noodle too!!
What would you do differently?:

do more swim training!!! but honestly, i am very very very happy with this swim!!
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

slow transition. ugh. wasnt feeling fast here at all.......oh well.
What would you do differently?:

go faster??? could start there........
Bike
  • 42m 4s
  • 15 miles
  • 21.39 mile/hr
Comments:

felt good on this ride. passed more people than people passed me so that was good. just after the turn around a guy in front of me dropped a CO2 cartridge off of his bike that hit mine. got lucky there as i dodged a bullet, er, cartridge in this case............
What would you do differently?:

actually mix the gatorade powder i had brought along to put in one of my water bottles and not leave it in my bag back in transition........
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

came in and was totally disorientated. wasnt sure i was at the right rack to begin with, then when i realized i was everything was ok, well, not everything since i had accidently grabbed the gel i was going to use for the run when i picked up my swim cap and goggles before the swim. realized i had that gel and gave it to my friend to run and put back on my towel but they wouldnt let him into transition. i had a bag full of gels in my duffelbag in transition but in my panic-get yer butt out on the run-mode i somehow couldnt find that bag. bottom line - lots of time wasted in transitions today!
What would you do differently?:

be better organized with my transitions.
Run
  • 19m 38s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

once i got over not having my gel and got my legs under me i felt great on this run.
What would you do differently?:

have the gel that i planned on having.........
Post race
Warm down:

got a bottle of water, chatted with friends and family, got some fruit, made fun of a couple of donkeys that tried running with their bike helmets on. drove home

What limited your ability to perform faster:

slow transitions

Event comments:

after thinking about this race..........initially i was a bit disappointed to be honest. had an "upper" goal of sub 1:10 which i thought i could honestly do. had a "realistic" goal of sub 1:15. so i beat my "realistic" goal and after thinking more about it i think i couldve gotten the sub 1:10 with better transitions and pushing harder on the bike and run, which i felt i couldve done since i was recovered before i was handed the bottle of water after the finish. another thing i feel good about is that previous to this tri i have only done two others....one in madison about 8 yrs ago and pewaukee last year. both of those tri's were kinda done on a "whim" and i was completely out of shape for both of those (pewaukee last year i was almost 200 lbs!) so you could make a case that this was my first tri that i have ever done where i was actually in shape. another think i like to do is take away positives from each event i do. in this case, I SURVIVED THE SWIM!!!! and also got my goal of exceeding 20 mph on the bike and also getting close to my goal of sub 6:30s for the run.......so in closing it was a good day for me!!

shout out to all the donkeys in attendance!!! my gosh, lots were there and all did the nation proud!! i can honestly say that i am proud to be a donkey with all the great effort that was put in at this race!!!

EEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWW
