Pre-race routine:

woke up @ 4:30am, had a bagel, and loaded the bikes and car and drove from tim/laura's to the race start.
Event warmup:

parked ~1 mile from the race and rode our bikes to transition. waited in line for bathroom and then talked with shelley and slake before hanging out with my with my sister the queen jockstrapper for a while. then we loaded up the buses and they took us across the river to the start line.
Swim
  • 25m 39s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

started very hectic, but finally cleared out and was able to jump on the feet of a decent swimmer. i finally realized we were all alone and i was worried he was pulling me way off course, but it turned out we were directly along the buoy line and the rest of the race went wide left for some reason. it was perfect for the whole swim.
What would you do differently?:

not sure. i need to get better at the start. maybe i'll try starting up front and sprinting it out.
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

average t1. first time with aero helmet and no issues.
What would you do differently?:

move a little faster? i lost up to 1:00 on a lot of people and it's not the run from the mat because i haul ass. i did put socks on so that might be it.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 33s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.44 mile/hr
Comments:

i couldn't get clipped in at the start and had to stop to do that 1/4 mile in. after that it was a great ride. i was a little slow in the technical sections, but i pushed the whole time and felt great on the climbs and flats.
i saw tim and laura riding, but my main goal was to catch k. it was a 2 loop course and she always gets screwed with late waves so i was trying to catch her on the end of her 1st loop before i finished. i finally got to smack her ass at ~mile 23.
What would you do differently?:

push the downhills too. pre-rding the course would have helped.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

great t2. getting out of my shoes was perfectly timed (unlike va run).
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Run
  • 40m 14s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

my sister told me i was 6:20 back from tim at the start of the run. that would be 1:00 per mile. possible, but tough. i took off fast right away to see what would happen.
i really like out and back courses now. i got to see tim, laura, slake, my sister, and dc mayor fenty twice. everyone looked great and it gets you fired up to keep pushing. i also was able to get 3 splits on tim. i was making up ground, but not fast enough. he held me off by almost 2:00. it's good to see him run well.
i felt great the entire run. i don't think i could have gone much faster, but i was basically fresh at the end of the race and could have held on for a lot longer. i'm looking forward to some longer stuff.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

cheered on others. saw slake, shelly, laura, and mayor fenty finish. unfortunately the sun was starting to come out, so we felt bad for the later waves, but everyone looked great.
talked to everyone and then ran out to a friends for a bbq.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

?

Event comments:

great race. can't think of a single complaint. like any race there could have been more port-a-johns and i'm not totally thrilled with the point to point swim, but neither caused any issues. the river is always questionable up until the race, but it was great. perfect temp and plenty clean.

they did screw up the transition set up (bike out and in was on the same side), but i was near that side so i shouldn't complain.
