Pre-race routine:

Drove in to New Orleans from Baton Rouge the day before to get packets. Signed Murray (12 y/o) up for the 5K there. Would have loved to browse the Riverwalk or the French Quarter, but came directly back to Baton Rouge instead. Napped a little that afternoon and ate lightly that night. Wanted a glass of wine, but passed, and drank water. Glad I did, because I slept well, getting up at 3AM. Drank some coffee and at yogurt, but I really wasn't hungry at all. Got the kids ready, and we left a little after 4. I sipped on some water on the way, but I was nervous about the lines for the port-o-potties.
Event warmup:

It was really cold down by the Superdome, in the low 50's and cloudy, that is when the sun came up. My top was sleeveless and Richard had on short sleeves, so we shivered a lot. Almost everyone had on long sleeves and I questioned our decision to dress for upper 60's. We huddled in the Superdome lobby, until like Katrina evacuees, they herded us out. I forgot to even consider running for a warmup. I was just trying to keep up with the kids, use the potties, and figure out where to line up. Everyone just seemed to bunch up at the start wherever they wanted to irregardless of pace. I got towards the back, knowing I was slow; a wise decision indeed. I was 4 minutes getting to the start after the gun.

Comments:

I followed my plan, and it worked perfectly. I did the 2:1 run:walk pattern. Very often, I wanted to run longer, but I made myself stop and walk. I never hurt, never was too winded, and that's amazing when I think about it. My choice of dress was perfect. All those long-sleeved shirts were lying on the ground in miles 1 and 2. About mile 9, I started passing people. I could see they were spent, and I was glad I had played it conservative. I thanked the volunteers and policeman as I went and thought, " I'm really doing this. Wow!" I ran most of the last mile, abandoning my pattern, just to have some fun with it. I knew I was home. Walker and Murray met me at the dome, and ran through the chute with me. It couldn't have been better. I met my goal of finish within 3:15. Now I feel an HIM is possible.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. My goal was to pace and finish strong, and I did. I hoped to be injury-free, so I could start the tri season, and I am.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a little and started to cramp. Had left my recovery bottle in the car! Took one sip of Gatorade and nearly hurled. Walked up the ramp of the dome and got some real Coke with sugar. I don't know why but it looked and tasted good. The cramps went away. Ate a Subway sandwich while the kids feasted. Next time, I'll be sure to have my recovery bottle near.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience. I was afraid I would melt-down around mile 10, so I was very conservative with my pace. I drank Perpetuem concentrate and sipped water from my Fuel Belt as I went. I'm glad I brought it all, because the water stops, although good, were too far apart for a 14 mile, or even 10 mile pace.
Richard said that people were pile up 5 deep at the first water stop when he came through. Most people didn't carry anything with them. I'll always bring my water with me in the future. The extra weight is worth it.

Event comments:

Great, fun race. Well-organized, in an awesome city. Will be back next year.

Am pleased with the negative splits starting after mile 6 (with the exception of 10). HR is an estimate. Forgot to stop the monitor for 30 min afterwards. Avg said 149, so did some calculations to come up with my best estimate. Probably +/- 2 bpm.
Course: Beautiful course! I couldn't imagine better, but then this is my first half marathon. Loved running through downtown and crossing Canal street. Tourists were everywhere, some cheering, some obviously drunk and hung over, some staring over their balconies, wondering why in the world so many would run through the Quarter at 7AM. Since I started way in the back, there was plenty of room for my run/walk pattern. I was never crowded. Richard, who started about 1/2 way up said the Quarter was miserable and he had to weave among all kinds of paces, even running on the sidewalk and neutral ground at times. St. Charles could have not looked better on a Sunday morning. The sun came out 1/2 way and it was heaven. All along the way there were people to encourage us. Mardi Gras beads were still hanging in the trees. New Orleans looked just as it did to me 27 years ago when I first saw it. The scars of the last 2 years were hidden at least from our view.
