Pre-race routine:

Picked up Brigham and his gear and headed out to Anthem. Arrived 2 hours early to get checked in and setup. Not as cold as last year but wet. Did some stretches to stay occupied. Had been really sick earlier in the week climaxing just 2 days earlier when I had to call in sick to work. The adrenaline is making me feel awesome.
Event warmup:

Hanging out talking with Brigham and his family.
Swim
  • 09m 42s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

The last time I went swimming was in July when I was camping at the Supai Indian Reservation. A little build up would have been nice instead of hitting this stuff cold turkey. Otherwise I loved my swim time and my state of mind upon completion.
Transition 1
  • 03m 59s
Comments:

The transition was a bit different from last year. My swim/transition time was a bit slower than last year. But last year I did train for the swim. At least this year when I exited I was ready for the coldness and wetness - a little bit more time used getting dressed for that reason. Rolled socks are the only way to go!
What would you do differently?:

Let out a hoot or holler to show my enthusiasm. Maybe knock Brigham’s bike over before he has a chance to notice - ha ha.
Bike
  • 52m 44s
  • 14 miles
  • 15.93 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I had my gears all worked out but my 2nd top gear kept skipping and so I'd have to keep my thumb on my gear selector for stretches at a time. Not a big deal, just a small distraction for about an 1/8 of the course.
What would you do differently?:

Are tire rubs legal? Nothing, in the future some South Mountain excursions would help with my ability to battle out the hills and the cross winds.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Oh yea, less than 1 minute. Ha ha, I was flying through the transition. My heart was racing, adrenlaine rushing, and my lungs collapsing.
What would you do differently?:

Not be so surprised that I was done in transition.
Run
  • 38m 42s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

I almost got to the first bridge/aid station and my legs were done. Had to walk a bit. This continued for the first 1/2 mile. Finally I picked a pace that was working for me and avoided the walk/run cycle and just kept a slow and steady jog going.
What would you do differently?:

I was proud of my effort but I needed more running miles in preparation of this run. My run last year was horrible and I was slower than last year. I need to make sure that the next time I'm a little more seasoned in the running department as this is the area I could make my biggest improvement in this race.
Post race
Warm down:

Came to a complete stop and accepted all fluids and Oreos offered.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not properly training (or training at all).

Event comments:

Had a great time. I can't take a race too seriously when I haven't done my part to get in shape and in a position to perform at my "A" game level. For this reason the pressure was off and I really had a great time. Except for the run I really felt that the rest of the race was done near my potential level.

Weeehaaaa! 2 laps in and I'm sucking air and my arms are shot. Then just to make sure I'm alive - Brigham had gotten stuck behind some swimmers so he stood up and gave me 3 quick smacks on the belly as I was trying to stay afloat with my backstroke. That woke me up and made me smile. Some how just kept trudging through and eventually hit those exit stairs. My legs had checked out and took a while to work.
Suit: yeah, I wore one - jk - basketball shorts
Course: Serpentine style in the pool. Up one side of the lane, down the other on the return. Cross into new lane, repeat. 8 lanes - 16 laps. Ha ha I must have smacked the same 5 guys in ever direction I swam. Good times!

OK, my odometer has been fine tuned and it was showing 14.9 miles so I'm not sure why it is rounded down to 14. Had a fun time biking. I kept forgetting what Brigham was wearing; based on early bike runs I thought I should catch him about 1/2 way through the first loop. Well I did catch him but then as I completed the first loop he pounced back up in front and we chit chatted for a bit. He then took off. Again I caught him at the same point of the 2nd loop. I thought from there I may be able to distance myself. Not the case. The man tore it up and jumped back in front to finish ahead of me. We were both passing folks pretty regularly with an occasional person passing. One of my sister’s earlier boyfriends blew my spokes off when he passed. It was nice to see someone I knew doing so well.
Wind: Cross-winds
Course: The winds were a factor for me. My seat felt like I was sitting on a block of ice - brrrrr! I slowed down to 11 miles an hour in one place going up hill with the wind blowing against me. I only ever topped out at 21 mph while I was biking down with the wind behind me. My legs were constantly drained and I never really did take advantage of the wind behind me.
