Pre-race routine:

We stayed at the race hotel, and it was so nice to wake up and leisurely stretch, have some coffee, and meander down to the race.
Event warmup:

Took a short run to see how the wind was going to affect me, and if I had too many clothes on.

  • 6.21 miles

Comments:

Very windy until the turnaround, and had to work very hard to run into it. Also, I've been slacking some since the HM in mid-November, so I probably wasn't as prepared as I could have been.
What would you do differently?:

Get out to the start earlier, and get up closer to the actual start line. Not only did that delay my start, but I couldn't get past the slower runners for awhile.
Post race
Warm down:

It was still cold and windy -- changed into warm, dry clothes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1) Stuck back in the pack, and 2) the fact that I still don't have my running shoes (lost suitcase) and have been running on a combination of old shoes that haven't done my feet any favors.

Event comments:

What is it with this race and their shirt problems??? Last year was a fiasco, and this year they ran out. I got a shirt, but my friend didn't!

Looks like all I did was complain about this race, but it was actually a decent race for me. I did end up second in my age group, and the competition in Pensacola is tougher than our local races. So I'm happy. :)

Still figuring out the new Forerunner. I did see that my first mile was about 30 seconds slower than my other miles, but that was because I was stuck back in the pack and couldn't run around everyone for awhile.
Course: Flat course on Pensacola Beach, down the main drag and through some of the neighborhoods. A lot of turns in the neighborhoods, and sand over the streets. Why not just run down the main street until the turnaround? During the race you can chose your distance -- 5K, 10K, or HM. I planned to run the 10K, and stuck with the plan.
