Pre-race routine:

I got up at 5AM, showered and ate breakfast. Drank coffee on the way into Richmond. Found the parking garage by a prayer, I hardly ever drive in the city so I don't know my way around and couldn't figure out which parking lot would be closest to the race site on the Tom-tom. Wandered around the park and had a good laugh at all the various costumed runnerd/groups. We had Richard Simmons and a crew of aerobics ladies, Mr Clean, I dream of Jeannie, a lab rat, some guy I couldn't quite identify in an orange speedo suit with face paint in orange and white and streamers on his arms/legs, fruit of the loom guys, Deal or no Deal girls, a gorilla with banana...
Event warmup:

Walked around a lot, hit the porta potties a few times ( I have a really nervous pre-race bladder) Watched the kids 1 mile race go off...

Comments:

Wet pavement on cobblestone is slippery. The crowds didn't thin down much this year as they did last year. I knew I was keeping a fairly consistent pace and was faster than my long runs of late but not as fast as last year. My plan was to negative split again, which I did accomplish so I'm happy with that (31.33 at the 5K and sub 30 for the last 5K) Loved the bands and the spectators. Needed more cowbell, love that cowbell at a race!
What would you do differently?:

More tempo runs to get pace right. Umm, not have pneumonia a month prior to the race that interrupted training...
Post race
Warm down:

Great post race party stop. It was chilly and cold so I walked through and grabbed a bagel, banana and organic low fat chocolate soy milk. Found my bag--which was not stored in a truck but left on the ground so the rain filtered in and my "dry" clothes post race were somewhat damp but better than my run clothes for warmth. Dropped stuff in my car and walked back over to find Kristen and Jen (enders_shadow, Artemis). We got someone to take our picture. I think Jen will be posting it since it's her camera :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

being sick in February
crowded run
wet road surface

Event comments:

I love this race, can't explain why since it is so crowded but it is a fun race and the city of RIchmond really turns out to encourage the participants. The first time I did it was brutally hot and people who lived along the route were hosing down runners to help them cool off so you know folks love this race around here...

Overall: 9265/30,000
Performance: Good
Course: Totally flat out Broad St a short turn onto Harrison and straight down Monument Avenue which has some of the prettiest homes in Richmond. Turn around at Chantilly and back up the other side of Monument so mile 1 and mile 5 are approximately the same place. I know this because I saw my friend Cindy at that point, she was baby sitting for another friend who was running.
