Swim
Comments: Goal was to be at 9:30 or less so this was a good start to the race. It was pretty rough early on however as I got tangled up with a lot of arms and legs since they started all the men in the water at the same time. Still, I was happy to have survived the start without getting kicked in the face. I decided after about 15 seconds of full contact swimming that I needed to go hard to get away from the cauous. That worked fairly well cause I found myself ahead of the second pack after about 200 yards or so (I actually thought for a second that I was leading the race which I thought was crazy and then I sighted and saw at least 10 guys ahead of me so that set me straight). There was one point with maybe 200 meters to go where I wanted to turn over on my back and catch my breath but I fought through the discomfort and didn't do it so I was proud that I made it through that somewhat difficult stretch. My swim rank was 14th overall. What would you do differently?: Swim harder from the start and start on one of the sides, probably the far right since everyone was bunched on the left. Also, use my legs more. I was worried about tiring them out too much on the swim, which is the case with an Olympic distance tri, but considering this is a sprint, I probably didn't have to worry about that too much. Transition 1
Comments: Even though this was better then my goal time of 2:30, it was about 20-30 seconds slower then it should have been. I had difficulty getting my shirt on since I was wet so I took it off and then put it on a second time. I also lost about 5 seconds trying to snap my helmet. What would you do differently?: Either bike and run without a shirt on or get a tri top or suit for sprint races. Bike
Comments: Great ride. This is what made the difference for me in the race. I was hoping to break 39 minutes as I had yet to do so on this course so I destroyed that mark. I passed about 6 guys nearly right away and then passed about another 6 or so the rest of the way. I got passed by only two or three guys so that was encouraging. I hit the hills hard and whenever I wanted to take it a little easy I kept telling myself, "This is a race damn it, go!" and that seemed to work very well. Spilts were roughly 12:15, 12:07, and 12:26 but that totals 36:50 so there's 7 seconds extra in there somewhere. My bike rank was 5th overall. Interestingly enough the top five bike ranks were the top five finishers (not necessarily 1-5). Just more proof that this is what can really make or break you in a tri. I suppose it makes sense since this is where you spend the biggest chunk of your time during a race. What would you do differently?: Nothing. This was a great ride for me. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition here. Quick laces are a great invention. What would you do differently?: Get a rack right where you come in from the bike portion. Run
Comments: I came out of T2 feeling pretty strong and I got my legs under me pretty fast. I set my marks on the guy in front of me. I figured he was about a 1/4 mile ahead of me so I thought I had a shot of catching him. However, once I completed the first mile, I realized that he was actually increasing his lead over me so I didn't think I had much of a shot of actually catching him. Likewise, the guy behind me was a ways off and so I didn't think that there was any way I was going to be caught so I kind of locked it into cruise control. I was still going at a decent pace, but I wasn't going all out. I came across the guy in 1st place at about the 1.25 mile mark. I started counting the runners as they went by and soon realized that I was in 6th place! Wow I thought! I made it through the turn around point and up the steep hill after that in pretty good shape and took it in from there. Splits were approximately 7:11, 7:06, and 6:52. My run rank was 11th overall, but I see the guy rank 10th had the same time as me so I guess I can say it was a top 10 time. What would you do differently?: Push myself slightly more throughout the run as I had some left in the tank after I was done, but knowing that I wasn't going to catch the guy ahead of me, I was lacking some motivation. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, drank some Poweraid, cheered on other racers, visited with Rob and Craig. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing- this was a great race for me. Event comments: I had a blast and it wasn't just because this was my best race to date. I continue to be impressed with the Papillion Rec. Dept. Keep up the good work. Gage (our 4 month old) woke up at 5 AM so that's when I got up as well. It actually worked out okay as I was planning on waking up at 5:30. I feed him and got him back to sleep, took a quick hot shower to wake up, got dressed, and then came downstairs to discover that Rob was ready to go as well. I ate two pieces of toast, a banana, and had a glass of juice. We were one of the first ones to arrive at the race site at 6:15 AM so we got our same racking spot as last year, though I'm thinking Rob was right that we should have grabbed the rack right where you come into after the bike portion but I don't think it mattered overall.
Rob and I rode around part of the course, jogged about half a mile, and then went for a quick swim. This was the perfect amount of warmup for all three disciplines.
