Swim
Comments: Wavy water, felt like I was riding in a boat. It was difficult to sight, only because I'm a dummy and wore tinted goggles when it was foggy during the swim. Was kicked in the mouth, tasted blood for most of the swim. What would you do differently?: Not wear tinted goggles on a foggy swim. Have a better plan of attack, not swim so far away from the buoys. Transition 1
Comments: I had a longer T1 than I should have, since I used my jersey pockets to store my flat fixing gear. What would you do differently?: Nothing, it went as good as it could considering the above. Bike
What would you do differently?: Nothing! Transition 2
Comments: Removed my flat fixing gear, put in my GUs. What would you do differently?: Nothing, it went fairly well considering the above! Run
Comments: That was one of the most difficult half marathons I've ever ran. I didn't eat/drink enough at all, I had 1 little GU the entire run. The 1st hill I thought was the bluff, but I was wrong. Once I made it to the top of the hill (after walking it), which was a crazy hill, I thought I could negative split my run (run split of 07:45). Turns out I was dead wrong. Not too many more miles ahead was the worst hill I've ever went up, it was the bluff that everybody was talking about. I walked up it, and it felt like I was hiking up the side of a mountain. My heart rate wouldn't go down, even when walking. When I got to the top, I started running, and that's when my heart rate was out of control. I'd stop, wait for my heart rate to hit low 150's, start again, and it'd be back to lower 180's in a couple minutes. Somehow I didn't bonk, and I saved enough energy for a "sprint" to the finish. What would you do differently?: Eat more than 100 calories. Go to the bathroom if needed. I had to pee since mile 3 on the run, but decided to tough it out. No... bad idea. I got cramps, which I'm sure was from a full bladder. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Myself!!!! I feel like the swim volume in my training plan wasn't enough to do very well for an open water half iron swim. Event comments: I say "just right", but it's kinda in between that and "too hard". I felt like I was going to die, but it was mostly my fault :-] I love learning lessons!!! Now it's 2 olympics, then the end of my tri season. I know what to do next season. Last updated: 2008-01-01 12:00 AM
