Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 2:30 -- checked out BT and found Zilla's wonderful inspire on her blog. THANK YOU! Tried to rest until about 4. Finally got up, fixed some coffee, ate a banana, said "Bye" to Ross and Rebecca (Rachel was still sound asleep), and loaded my bike in the car. (Had put the transition bag in the night before). Short drive to UA and found parking really easily. Had the devil of a time getting the wheel back on my bike; by the time I was done, Tri-Girl Leslie and her sister Bridget had arrived. Seeing purple, I went over and introduced myself. They were very helpful and I ended up setting up my transition next to Leslie's and hanging with them until I had to swim. Thanks to Elaine and her transition clinic notes. They really helped!
Event warmup:

Warm-up???????? Warm-up?????? It was 45 flipping degrees out there. I was just glad to be in the first wave. Got in the pool early and hung out there and got warmer.
Swim
  • 32m 28s
  • 825 yards
  • 03m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well, my beathing and swim were average -- for me. Which is to say, not great. Went out too fast and by lap 5, I was thrashing and had reverted to every other stroke breathing. Thoughts of quitting crossed my mind. However, I calmed down, and decided to take it one lap at a time, and rest at the end of each lap to allow my HR to calm down. Then I had 10 and 11 laps done -- 1/3 done! Next it was 16/17 -- we're halfway there! Now 20. Then 24. When I had 5 laps left, the race officials had me move to the single lane so that they could get the next wave started. Zilla came along and cheered me through those last few laps. THANK YOU!
What would you do differently?:

Take rests even from the beginning and focus on form. Also, do tons more swim training.
Transition 1
  • 10m
Comments:

Took a little time deciding what to wear. Was going to wear capri pants, but changed my mind and went with the tri shorts. Did ditch the tri-top in favor of the long-sleeved top I got yesterday. VERY glad that I did. Also had some of a Carb-Boom and a little liquid.
What would you do differently?:

Get a race belt (lost some time switching the number between the two shirts I used). Rip the top off of the Carb-Boom before starting the race. Push a little more to get out of transition.
Bike
  • 52m 22s
  • 12 miles
  • 13.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Euclid STINKS!!!!!!!!!! Too rough and too many potholes. Other than that, it was nice. Granted, everyone passed me, but many people shouted out encouragement as they went by.
What would you do differently?:

The "hot dates" with Coach Troy have helped -- guess I'll be seeing more of him between now and July. ;)
Transition 2
  • 10m
Comments:

Took in a little more Carb-Boom and a little more liquid.
What would you do differently?:

See T1. (I guessed on both times, but I didn't rush either time).
Run
  • 37m 22s
  • 3 miles
  • 12m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt REALLY weird running after the bike. Took most of the first lap to get the kinks out. Did a lot of walking, interspersed with the running. Never really felt like the breathing improved.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe stretch a little after the bike to work a few kinks out.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around some, snagged another Carb-Boom from the snack table.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm having problems breathing -- I never seem to breath in the lower part of my lungs, just the upper 1/3. I've also noticed this when I'm teaching; sometimes I get breathless. Thursday, I've got an appointment with a new G.P. -- I'll bring it up to her and maybe ask for a pulmonary function test.

Event comments:

My first race -- if I had pushed through transition a little harder and had run a little more, I would not have come in last. However, the goal for this race was to finish. Now I have an idea what to work on for July. (EVERYTHING! ;) ) Ok, but the swimming was the worst and that swim in July is long and serpentine.
