Pre-race routine:

This was my third year to do the Disney marathon with my friend. The first year I ran for time by myself. Last year I did Goofy. We tried to stay together but my friend had a stress fracture and tendonitis, so half way through I went ahead. This year my goal was to stay with my friend through the entire race, have fun, and not worry about our time. We flew out on Thursday and went to the expo. We spent Thursday evening and all day Friday (from 9am to midnight) in the parks. My mom's pedometer says we walked 16.5 miles on Friday at the parks (although I don't think we went that far - more like 10-13). We took it easy Saturday, had some pasta for dinner, and got our things ready for Sunday morning.
Event warmup:

We woke up at 2:30 Sunday morning. I got dressed, made sure I had everything and then went to the hotel dining area to get hot water so I could make my oatmeal. I sat in the lobby eating my oatmeal waiting for my friend and for my parents who were walking their first marathon. They met me at 3:30 and we got on the bus to head over to the race site. We sat around until time to check our bags and then headed to the corals.

Comments:

The friend I was running with has a tendancy to start out too fast for her pace, so I tried to hold her back some in the beginning. This was not hard to do with the crowd. We stopped at each mile marker to get a picture with one of us in front of the billboard. Even doing this we were still holding a decent pace for her for a while. At mile 10 we took our first bathroom break. And then we enterred Magic Kingdom and had to stop and take pictures with all the characters we saw. This was our third slowest mile of the race. Between Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom we got back into the decent pace. When we hit Animal Kingdom we stopped for more pictures. When we left Animal Kingdom my friend's knee started acting up so we started a more run/walk interval. By the out and back at 20/21, my excercised induced asthma and the humidity was making it hard for me to breathe. We had already slowed down a lot with all the pictures and didn't really care what our time was, so we just took it easy the rest of the way in. I was glad to be back in Epcot and working our way around the world. Once we got our last picture at the 26 mile marker next to the choir, we took off for the final .2 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Because we did this one purely for fun and didn't care about time, I wouldn't do anything different. It would have been nice if it weren't so humid, but we can't control that. Knowing that I was going to be running with my friend, I probably should have trained some with intervals. It was hard for me to get going again after our walk breaks. We had a lot of fun and have MANY pictures, so I'm happy. And the best part of running much slower is that I never did have the "marathon shuffle".
Post race
Warm down:

After finishing, we grabbed a coke, some food, and our checked bag and hung out waiting for my parents to finish. We got our picture made with Mickey and Minnie and then watched the steaming video of the finish line. We saw my parents approaching and headed over to meet them. We took the bus back to the hotel and just as we got inside the rain came.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Staying with my friend and the humidity.

Event comments:

I really like doing Disney for fun and the medal this year was very nice. Not sure if I'll do it again next year or not, but we may be back for the 5th anniversary of Goofy. We'll see.
