Pre-race routine:

I woke up tired. My legs were sore from my duathlon the day before. Still after having a first place finish at that race I wanted to round out the weekend with another strong race. Like the day before, I made a victory pancake and some coffee. Had a Gatorade on the way to Chatfield Reservoir State Park.
Event warmup:

Not much ran to the parking lot to go pee real quick... I went in front of a car that seemed to be well covered... and then... BEEP! BEEP! There was a dude in the car trying to stay warm I guess. OOPS!

Comments:

I am super happy about this run. Even though I raced the day before, and the course was hilly with about 800 feet of ascent, a lot of wind and some snow coverage, I missed a personal best at this distance by only 29 seconds. The course that I did run my personal best on was a pancake flat course on a perfect fall day in 2005 near the end of a marathon training cycle. So this effort is really, really great!

I think I ran a really smart race. My hood to coast team-mate (a 2:40 marathoner)Justin, was there and although I did beat him last month in the 10K race, I didn't expect to beat him this time (and I didn't)... but I paced off of him. When we hit mile 1 at 5:47 I backed off. I knew that this was way to fast for me. Justin pulled ahead and another guy ran off with him. I kept them in my sites and through mile 4 they only had about a 30 second lead on me. After the turn-around I saw that those two were gaining on a fast looking guy up ahead (turned out to be Brad Cooper - SUPER FAST GUY)... At about mile 5 the 3 of them ran together... Brad surged but before long both Justin and this other guy passed Brad. I knew that Brad was struggling and I have never beaten this guy in a race before. At this point I was in 10th place. If I was ever going to beat brad, I would have to be patient. at about mile 7 I could sense that it wouldn't be long before I caught Brad. I passed him with a surge on a snowy uphill... he told me, "nice work" and he had no answer to my surge. I felt like I had just won the race! I looked up ahead and Justin was breaking away form the other guy that was running with him. I realized that Justin probably took the spirit out of him and if I just held steady I would catch him too. By mile 8 I was in 8th place and Justin was about a minute to two minutes ahead of me... I felt like I gained on him in the last mile but he was too far ahead for me to catch. I doubt he would let me anyway. I was stoked to roll in about a minute after him.
What would you do differently?:

I ran a smart race. Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with another large BT crowd. I'm in awe of how active our Colorado BT contingent is.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Outside of the wind, the snow and the hilly course, my race the day before.

Event comments:

A great day and a great weekend of racing. 1st place on Saturday, 8th place on Sunday. I'm feeling great!
