Pre-race routine:

This race was actually run, bike, run, bike. So the bike sections are together.
So it all started the night before. THe weather was going to be perfect, then WHAM! At 8 P.M. a storm hit that last all of about 1 hour and dumped 4 inches of white stuff. Great, what to do bike wise?
I wake up around 7ish and start to sort out the bikes. Pull down the MTN bike and try to take off the pedals to put cages on so I could race the whole thing in tennis shoes. Well the pedals would not come off, I actually broke a steel open end wrench. So I put the cages on the Tri bike just in case I could ride that and I would just ride on top of the MTN bike pedals. Ok, ate 2 waffles with peanut butter on them and half a protein shake. Some decaf coffee too. Loaded the bikes and got Michele in the car, she was racing too. The snow on the road was like powdered sugar. I was going with the MTN bike and yakstrax.
Event warmup:

short run jsut to maybe warm up the legs. I don't think I got them warmed up.

Comments:

Ok, since this section was a short run, most everyone ran with helmets on. We went off in waves, I was in the second wave. Started near the front and was 3 into the the first corner. THen I passed a feww people from the wave in front. Waves went off every 3 minutes. Finished the run and hustled to the bike. Couldn't find it right away and all the BT'ers watching were laughing. It was humorous. Legs felt real tired already in the race. Not a good sign of things to come.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up better.

Comments:

Since there was 2 bike legs I will post what happened in order.First bike leg was 3.3 miles. I couldn't get any speed going on the MTN bike. Very frustrated to see MTN bikers and road bikes going by me. My legs had nothing in them today. Everything felt like a struggle. Unlike last race where everything seemed smooth and easy paced. I saw Richard and he was more than 3 minutes ahead so I knew he had a good run. I turn at the tower loop and get up on the flat section and I am saying to myself, I have no Power! I look down and I have a flat. Great how long have I had that. So I am thinking ok just go to the car and switch out with the Tri bike. SO I come up around the corner and turn right. All the volunteers are yelling at me to turn farther down the road. I knew what I was doing. I open the car with the key pad, pull the tri bike out, put the MTn bike in and lock it up. Get on the tri bike to get to transition and almost fall. I couldn't fit the yakstrax in the cages so I just kept going. This must have cost me at least 1:30 minutes. Considering I was last on the bike, It must have been pretty close.
Second bike leg. Much better time wise but I had nothing in the legs. I still had MTn bikes passing me so I just pushed around tempo because that is all I had.
Then You had to jump off the bike and run to the finish. THat was fine. No one passed me.
What would you do differently?:

Don't know.

Just was slow to get off the bike and rack it. Just an off day!
What would you do differently?:

Not have an off day.

Comments:

This run section just about took it all out of me. Got going pretty well but then at about mile run I was done. I had just passed a guy and he repassed me. I saw Kenny and knew he would catch me. He didn't catch me but he put in a better run time than I did. I was overheating and miserable. I forgot to take off the helmet for this one and it was warming up. I had had no water this race.
What would you do differently?:

Lots, think about gear changes, and drink some water.
Post race
Warm down:

None, I was toast.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, weather, don't know for sure.

Event comments:

Great winter series race. Always challenging and fun! Great to see all the BT'ers who were racing and Cheering. Good to have lunch with everyone too! Not the best race but it was fun!
