Total Time = 2h 12m 13s
Overall Rank = 32/357
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 3/73
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30, bottle of Ensure and small bowl of cereal. Drove to Chisago City to meet up with Tom (Kona) Krenz to carpool. We arrived a little later than I had hoped and had to speed up the normal transition setup routine. Luckily our wave had their own set of racks so finding a spot was not problem. Bryan (mndiver) said hello but I was in race mode so didn't chat much - sorry Bry :)
Event warmup:

Quick spin on bike to check mechanicals and get it in the right gear for the quick short hill at start.
Swim
  • 26m 26s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was staining interior logs on our house (by hand-brushing) the night before so my arms felt a little dead. Did a nice warmup and headed to the start area entrance. Pro triathlete Chris Legh (Australia) was right in front of me and I wished him luck - very nice guy. Managed to keep within contact with a fair number of racers from the start. I usually get dropped right off the bat. I was actually surrounded by other swimmers for the entire race, which is unusual for me. Usually I'm by myself way in the back. Was actually able to draft behind another racer for a good portion of the swim. Over 2.5 minute improvement from my first race here, and 1:19 improvement over last year....although its hard to compare swim courses exactly from year to year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I'll take it
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

This has to go down as one of the lamest T1 transitions in history - one of my worst ever. I just wasn't focused for some reason. They put the elites at the farthest part of the T area this year, which was good because we were on hardtop pavement instead of the usual grass and mud, but it just took longer to get there.
What would you do differently?:

Take me head out of my butt...not sure why I was just spaced out.
Bike
  • 1h 02m 54s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt like a decent effort. At the turnaround I met Tom as he was returning and when I reached the cone I figured I was behind him by only 1:30. His swim was 3 minutes faster than mine so I was able to take a fair amount out of his lead on me in the first half of the bike course. Got out of my shoes about 1/4 mile from the finish and then rode with feet on top of shoes which made for a good dismount.
What would you do differently?:

Nuttin
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Went smoothly - so smoothly I felt like I was forgetting something.
Run
  • 39m 15s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Pushed as hard as I could but the gradual uphill on miles 2-3 is tough. I was steadily gaining on Tom and managed to finally pass him on the downhill after the turnaround. It was getting hot and sticky on the second half. I was about a minute slower than last year's run, but 43 sec faster than 2006. Maybe a little flat due to 60 miles of biking yesterday.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing today

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Its early in the season and I'm training thru these B/C races.

Event comments:

Buffalo is simply a very nice race - I'll keep coming back.

Course: They modified the course this year to eliminate the confusing inner loop. Last year there were several racers that got DQ'd because they either didn't do the course correctly, or were outright given wrong directions by course volunteers. The new layout is much better, although there is one intersections where racers going out to/coming back from the out and back have to criss-cross so you had to be on your toes.
