Pre-race routine:

Got to the race super early to try and relax. I couldn't sleep anyways, so no biggie. Tried to stay away from everyone and get my mind straight. Lots of stretching and focusing
Event warmup:

Abotu a 2 mile bike, jumping jacks, stretching.
Swim
  • 26m 26s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim of course is my favorite part because it is what I am best at. I think the course was long because a 1500 should take me only 22 minutes. Or maybe I got a little of course? Got hit at beginning of swim but used to that kind of stuff. It seemed like there was a group of 4 guys that took a lead in front and I was a trailer. Passed countless people on the swim. Can't believe people were such wusses on water temp... I was just so glad that the race had started!
What would you do differently?:

Goggles would be nice.
Transition 1

Comments:

Pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn to run with bike better. Visualize/practice the transition more in pre-race routine.

Comments:

Holy moly!! Ok, so we take off and are already climbing a hill directly into a headwind. Then we have our first detour into a residential neighborhood. At the detour turnaround I eat asphalt and scrape myself up pretty bad. My handlebars were bent sideways in the crash and made the rest of the ride that much more interesting. Then more uphill against the wind. Turn around and time for the second detuor straight into hell. Vertical climbs then steep descents. I haven't trained on this kind of terrain and so it was so difficult for me. Also, the steep descents topping 45MPH with handlebars bent sideways are interesting. Got passed by probably 20 people on the bike. Passed maybe 5. My average HR for the bike ride was my lactacte threshold HR. Seems pretty amazing to me. Like I can't believe I was able to hold this effort for this long AND run afterwards. So crazy with this HR my avg speed was only 17MPH. If I was on normal terrain I would figure this HR to calculate closer to 22-23MPH.
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn how to take corners fast. My crash hurt and made the ride even more difficult afterwards. When I got home I learned my wheel was a little bent and rubbing. GRRR. Like I needed that. I would say to go easier than biking the entire course at LT, but I ran well afterwards so who cares!!!!
Transition 2

Comments:

Thank God the bike was over. Now I'm seriously doubting my ability to run.
What would you do differently?:

Once again, learn to run with bike better!

Comments:

The first 3 miles were sooo tough for me. Took only water at aid stations. Wanted to stop so many times but kept repeating my mantra to myself and kept moving. Stopped for a total of 10 seconds to stretch calf so I was able to push myself very well. Good mantra! At the turn around I started to feel juiced and picked up my pace significantly. Was in great spirits last 3 miles. Passed a handful of people coming back and saw everyone I was in front of. Really helped deep down to see my accomplisment thus far.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all! Very impressed with my run especially taking into account I was sidelined from running for the last 1.5 months!
Post race
Warm down:

Hamburger, beans, vitamin water. Chatting with people about how stoked I was!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills/headwind. The bike was my key limiter in this race for sure. If it was a little more flat it would have been much faster and my run would also be faster.

Event comments:

This was my first triathlon!! I heard soo many people bad-mouthing the race afterwards saying they hated the bike. But it's a triathlon. ITS GUNNA BE HARD!! I personally loved the challenge and how my body and mind was able to push harder/faster than I thought humanly possible. Biking 1.5 hrs at LT and then running 6 miles a 9min/mile. Seems remarkable to me and shows me I did the course the fastest I possibly could. I gave it 110% and loved every second of it no matter how bad it hurt, that's all I could ask of myself. The crash was pretty sweet too, got tons of comments about how 'bad ass' I looked all cut up. Too bad it also ripped my brand new $120 tri suit. But I think it was almost worth it! After the race I sat down to eat next to a guy who told me he has done 35 Ironmans (he's 65) and he told me the hills were hard for him, so it made me feel much better about myself. People in triathlon are so nice and the races bring out the best in everyone. What an amazing sport and cannot wait to do so many more. When I got home I saw my new bike had arrived too so SWEET!! Next bike leg will ne done on a Javelin Narni, soooo much better than my current set-up. Gunna go even faster!
Just a side note, I went to Havasu by myself and thus experienced my first triathlon completely solo. In hindsight I wouldn't have it any other way. Everything to this point in my training has been alone. My long runs and bike rides I have only myself and my mind and it was nice to experience this type of independence on race day as well. It is a lonely sport, but it helps get my mind right and my body feeling strong. And I think I'm a pretty cool guy to hang out with, so I don't mind it.
Will post results in comparison to age group/overall when made public.
