Age Group Rank = 75/128
Pre-race routine:

Day Before: Ralxed & organized all kit and drinks etc for following day. Ate Fish & Pasta for dinner, after Turkey sandwich for lunch. Went to bed 9pm.

Wake up 3:30am, 2 scrambled eggs, 1 banana, smoothie (Nature smoothie blend etc) for breakfast.

Cycle to transition area. Pick spot close to bike exit & set up.

Walk down to swim start checking directions etc & looking at swim to bike 500m run, swim entry/exits.

Laid down & chilled out

Event warmup:

Stretched shoulders, calves & Hamstrings - no real heart-rate warmup.
Swim
  • 19m 15s
  • 825 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good Swim - Started 3 back on right hand side and worked up RHS of course - no drafting - swam own race - only went slightly off course once.

Happy with it
What would you do differently?:

Move to centre and try draft - but unrealistic at moment
Transition 1
  • 04m 18s
Comments:

Took too long - uphill run got me a little winded - probably mixture of apprehension during swim & run afterwards & I was more tired than should have been.
What would you do differently?:

Gotta speed up transitions - suck it up and go - wasted good couple of mins with this sh!t.
Bike
  • 43m 48s
  • 13.67 miles
  • 18.73 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't feel like I had any 'go' - could push it for a while but then the small inclines I struggled on badly. MPH dropped to 13/14 up them and people easily went past me - would pass them back on the flat but nothing in me uphill.

Gas from pre-race drinks not good - nearly puked.

Could feel hamstrings cramping

Not happy with it
What would you do differently?:

Leave the performance drinks alone - or drink them earlier - or train with them more often rather than introduce them on raceday.

Gotta push up the inclines
Transition 2
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

Took too long to get shoes off (laceups) and had to contend with hamstrings 'knotting' painfully. Had to stop and stretch before trying to run.

Again, gotta push through this - can't pretend I have time for a rest at transitions.
Run
  • 29m 55s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs cramping & stitch as start run - hurting now and having to focus to run it out. Took 2 miles before I felt I could stride it out. 8 mins for final mile.
What would you do differently?:

Try striding it out before - gotta push it
Post race
Warm down:

Short stretch

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Smoothie sat heavy with me and caused gas - or somehthing did. Too much liquid in morning before race.

Stomach really felt bloated

Either that or drank too much of Lake Michigan!!

Had enough mental 'stuff' to push through race but not to suck up the discomfort and bike/run as hard as I know I could.

Don't think I raced to my potential - for whatever reason.

Event comments:

Great to do the race - happy I worked for it and completed it - just a little disappointed I didn't do as well as I thought I could.
