Pre-race routine:

We all got up at the butt crack o' dark. It was the hardest 3am wake up I've had. Had some water, half a Clif Bar and some more water. Didn't really feel like eating a ton.
Event warmup:

Early morning ride over to transition. It was about a mile and a half from the hotel. Rode our bikes over. I fell over in an intersection because I couldn't unclip fast enough. I think I was still asleep.
Swim
  • 49m 19s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

Well, again, still obvious that I need to get a swim coach and quick! Definitely will be working on swimming in the off season...among other things. It was the longest breast stroke run I've ever had.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, need more practice, need more practice
Transition 1
  • 03m 54s
Comments:

Considering there is quarter of a mile run from swim out to transition. Barefoot and over a bit of gravel on the soft feet. Not to mention, since I was in one of the last few waves of the day, my bike was aaaaaallllllllll the way back in the farthest back corner. It was like running down side streets just to get to it.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe next year, they will reshuffle the waves and I won't be near the back of the transition area.
Bike
  • 1h 30m 57s
  • 24 miles
  • 15.83 mile/hr
Comments:

The City of Chicago needs to repave that road. It's horrible.
What would you do differently?:

Need more time on the bike. That or get a lighter bike. It's a bit heavy to begin with.
Transition 2
  • 04m 16s
Comments:

Again, back to the bowels of transition. I decided that it wasn't really going to make too much a difference at this point to run like hell. So I took a brisk walk from rack to run out. Helped to save my legs.
What would you do differently?:

Pray that next year, my bike won't be so far away.
Run
  • 1h 07m 33s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

The sun was high in the sky by the time I hit the run. It began to warm up too. The scenery was great and I enjoyed the views. Had to walk alot, but I figured I deserved to.
What would you do differently?:

I need to order some new, bionic knees. I can't wait for my new shoe inserts to come in. I can barely walk my knees are swollen so much.
Post race
Warm down:

Very slow walking around and pigging out on any food I could lay my hands on.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More training. Been slacking a bit, but I figured that this was pretty decent for my first long course. Now I have some numbers to gauge by.

Event comments:

It was a well organized and fun race to do. I think the expo was a great time and good money sucker. I think I may have bought too much. But, you can never buy too much. I would like to do this one again next year.

Wind: Headwind with gusts
Course: It was nice and windless earlier in the day, but by the time my wave started about 3.5 hours after the start of the race, the wind had picked up significantly. Had some nasty headwind on half the 2 loop course. The ride with the wind at your back helped to pick up time lost. Not to mention, Lake Shore Drive is a very bad road to ride on, there was debris everywhere. I even had picked up a piece of someone's sunglasses in my front wheel which broke my bike computer sensor, so I had no speed, distance, HR for the entire ride. Good thing I just had my trusty watch on.
