Run
Comments: Aerobically I felt very strong and would have like to push it down the hills especially Mile 11 due to the grade. Calves tightened up at mile 9 and seemed to tighten up every downhill after Mile 9. Mile 7 is straight up a hill and was pretty much all uphill, the hill from hell. The view once close to the top was magnificent looking down at the Ohio. In between Mile 1 and 2 a young lady tried to jump a curb where 2 lanes merged and she fell, I went back and helped her up and ran with her for a few yards to see how she was doing. Hope she finished her race, I think she was doing the marathon, hope she mentally fought through that fall. She was scraped up but not too bad. What would you do differently?: Stretch my calves and try a GU in the middle of the race. Otherwise it was a wonderful race. Post race
Warm down: Went through the post race booths and ate Vanilla Ice Cream, Sun Chips, drank water and pretty much pigged out eating everything. Got my medal and my pic taken and proceeded to the bus to get my bag. Walked around Hyde Park and decided to get back to the hotel. Walked back approximately 2 miles to the Hotel. Spoke to a nice young lady from Lexington on the way back to the hotel. What limited your ability to perform faster: Calf cramps. Event comments: Excellent race. Very well organized and there were not too many runners like the Indy Mini. Hills were challenging especially since I have never trained on hills. I believe that downhills is where you can hurt yourself even more now. Anyone have any suggestions on preventing my calves from tighening up? I will definitely do this again. Pump and Run RESULTS Bench Presses: 50 reps @ 65% of my Body Weight for max deduction of 100 minutes. Bench Press was done Saturday the evening before the race. Did the Curl portion for fun with 40% of Body Weight. 33 reps. Half Marathon with 100 minute deduction was: Negative 3 minutes and 19 seconds which was 3rd Overall and 1st in my age group (40-49) out of 31. Love the PNR portion of this race. Very happy with the PNR. Got a Gold Award for getting over 30 reps in the bench and Get a Medal for winning the age group. They are sending the medals to me in the next month or so, they better!!! Woke up @ 3 AM and laid in bed at the Marriott in Covington, KY. Ate a Powerbar and drank some Gatorade. Took a shower and changed into my running attire. Bib number was 11317.
Left the hotel at 5 a.m. Walked over to Paul Brown Stadium over the Ohio River and took my stuff to the bus to get checked in. Sat down and talked to Bob who I roomed with. Bob did the marathon. We went to the Start line about 6:00 a.m. and stood and waited. Marathon was delayed due to a fire on Eastern Ave, part of the marathon approximately 22 miles into the marathon. The race director indicated that it would be at LEAST a marathon. Bob said it was at least a quarter of a mile longer than 26.2 miles. Race started at 6:45 a.m.
