Pre-race routine:

Drove up to Sacramento on Friday, left at 11am. Stopped at Olive Garden for lunch (Shrimp Primavera) and had dinner at my cousin's house in Manteca, CA. Had a really interesting dinner, pasta with cauliflower and tofu, with yogurt and saffron. Also had scallops with brussels sprouts. Drove the last hour to Sacramento, and fell asleep as soon as I got to the hotel.
Saturday, woke up, and actually went to the Opera, being broadcast in HD Live across the country. Great idea - really distracting and relaxing. Of course, I forgot my sports bra, so had to buy a new one, as well as yankz. Had a bit of pasta with grilled chicken for lunch, but couldn't eat much of it because it was in an (unadvertised) butter sauce. It tasted yum-o, though! In the afternoon, drove the race course (really nice, noticed some interesting things, like...oh...railroad tracks!) and checked out the swim course. Had dinner with my parents, who joined me from their San Francisco vacation to watch, and had pasta...with shrimp. YUM! Spent the evening making last minute decisions - bringing camelpak, not bringing water belt, bought flip-flops for the race, etc. ALso found out it's a mass start, so did an emergency call to Robert, who told me to hang back and wait for most others to get in the water. Going to sleep around 10:00, for a good-ol six and a half hours.
Event warmup:

Woke up at 4:30, had a mega-mango jamba juice and a piece of bread with PB+J, and woke up my mom, because I was so nervous. She drove me to the T2, I set up my sneakers and belt, and then she drove me to T1. My mom and dad are both incredible - so eager to help, and so thrilled to be there. She helped me set up, and departed. The race was fairly poorly organized, and of course started late. I ran (in my westsuit and flip-flops - 1st LESSON: **bring an extra pair of crappy running shoes to a 2 transition race!** 2nd LESSON: **Bring stationary trainer to warm up at race!** I got in the water, and first issue. Freaked out a bit because the water was so murky...It really freaked me out and made me extremely claustrophobic. Have to practice swimming in lakes, and swimming with my eyes closed. However, I swam for a bit, and realized my goggles were leaking. I tried to tighten them, but i was already in the water, so tried to gently use my teeth to loosen it...huge mistake. It ripped a tiny bit, enough so I couldn't pull it through. I tried to knot it, but the knot (even the smallest one) made them too tight, and gave me a headache. And so, the race begins...

Comments:

So, considering my goggles were broken, and I freaked out, it was...ok. I I couldn't put my head in the water, because my googles were leaky and wearing contacts. So, I did mainly backstroke. I purposely held back about 30 seconds, as it was a mass start and I was nervous about that. I started, had to hold on to a a kayak to try and fix the goggles, but no luck. So, i tried to front stroke with my head up, which was really hurting my neck, and I was really nervous. So, I just started backstroking. I was way behind everyone, except for one guy, who started to catch up in the end, so I went really quickly. He was actually really nice, as I got out first, but was really dizzy on the ramp, so took a minute. He still let me do the timing chip first, so I wasn't last!
What would you do differently?:

Bring extra goggles, do a practice swim so I know they fit, get used to swimming in murky water, PRACTICE.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I was really dizzy coming in from the swim, so took time to get oriented, drink water, etc. The transitions were not timed, so this made the biking a bit longer. Walked out past the starting time, crossed the street, and started.
What would you do differently?:

It's more the swim...I guess practice multitasking, but I wasn't going to start when I was dizzy and nauseous, so I don't know what I would have done. Fine.

Comments:

I did really well, up until the last 1.7 miles. I felt really good I was singing, and having a grand old time, ate some of a sandwhich, drank a lot, and had a gel and some sports drink. THe sports drink is a bit too milky for my taste. Anyway, was biking fine, wearing gnats hovering around the 15 mph area, and then passed a woman who asked me to tell the people up ahead she needed help. People needing help is motivation for me, so that got me to go quicker. I sang a lot, which always helps. Nothing's impossible, etc. I also cheered for the people passing me on the way back down. I love being a cheerleader. A gnat flew into my eye, that was unpleasant and caused my left eye to get dry. On the last 1.7 miles, I got confused and nervous, as there were cars, etc., so I took it kinda slow. Towards the end, my contact fell out, and I had to walk to the transition. Ick, ick, ick.
What would you do differently?:

I don't even know...know the course better? Feel more confident in my skills? It felt really good, till the end. This feels like kind of a freakish race for vision.
Transition 2

Comments:

Fine. I was tired and hot, but fine.
What would you do differently?:

I don't even know. Have my shoes looser?

Comments:

I was getting tired, hot and uncomfortable at this point...my sock was rolled down for a while, and really hurt my feet. I kept saying my mantras, and finally snapped out of it and remembered that a freakin' YEAR AGO, I couldn't even run a quarter mile, so I stopped feeling sorry for myself and kept running. At mile 5, my dad pulled up in the car. I was really freaked out, thinking that they closed the race, but he was just there to be my cheering section. How sweet is that? It was really great.
What would you do differently?:

Um...I don't know. Run faster, I guess...but I really did my best!
Post race
Warm down:

Tried (sucessfully!) not to throw up, walked around, had mexican food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training due to outside forces (no regrets or shame!) goggles and eye trouble, fear and unforeseen fear.

Event comments:

I'd do this race again, especially now that I've figured out the course. Sacramento is a great town, and it's a really nice small race. I definitely want to do it again next season, to NOT be last. I really am over that. ;-)
