Run
Comments: As I report on each segment I'll make comments and also compare it to my times on this same course in Sep 2007. I went out slow then slowly built up my pace. As is usual with HFP, the course was marked poorly. I went through mile 1 in 6:58 (according to the marker), then sped up, but finished with a 8:01 pace. Now, is the course long? Was the marker wrong? Or both? I say both? Hot hot hot. First time ever I took water during the run. And I did so at every opportunity. Time comparison with 9/278/2007 = 0:57 seconds faster! What would you do differently?: I hung in well. Nothing better could have been done at this point. Transition 1
Comments: First time that I ran in socks and had the shoes already on the bike. I also ran through the T area. I did need to stop and drink some. Overall I was surprized by how hard it is for me to get the T times down. Time comparison with 9/278/2007 = 0:18 seconds faster! What would you do differently?: I did my best. Bike
Comments: I road hard. It was just too hot to do better. I ran out of water early on. My gears would not drop down to the little chain ring for the hill climb. I climbed in a gear too big and hurt the legs a bit at the end of the bike. Time comparison with 9/278/2007 = 3:04 minutes faster! What would you do differently?: Take more water. Transition 2
Comments: Not fast, but faster at least. Time comparison with 9/278/2007 = 0:24 seconds faster! What would you do differently?: I did well. Run
Comments: I slowed some from the first run but as the rankings show, I did not slow as much as the competition. So I think I did kind of OK. Time comparison with 9/278/2007 = 0:42 seconds faster! What would you do differently?: I did fine given the heat and my being tired from the volume of training I put in over the last three weeks. Post race
Warm down: Warm down!!? I ate a bannana and had about 10 drinks (water, soda, etc). What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat and showing up tired. Event comments: The whole race went poorly. I don't think I did too bad, but much worse than anticipated. The heat and humidity had a lot to do with that. This was the same course as my first even on 9/27/2007. I compared numerous peoples times with the Sep 2007 and this one. In ALL instances, the comparision showed anywhere from 3 minutes to more than 10 minutes slower for the Sprint Duathlon. I still know I could have done better even with the heat, but factoring in the heat obviously slowed us all down. HFP comments. Long lines at check-in pushed back the start times on an already very hot day. Numerous people were complaining about not being told where to go when near the T zones. Even as I approached the dude directing race traffic I had to motion which way to go before the waved throught the correct place. A couple other guys went the wrong way and complained afterward. The food station for post race was kind of bare. There were plenty of police at intersections keeping things safe. The general buzz about the race was good. Last updated: 2008-01-22 12:00 AM

I ate three oatmeal raisen cookies. I ate a pack of block shots and a little packed of that gooey stuff. I drank only 4 glasses of wine to get a good nice sleep in (record low!!)
It was hot and humid. It was the hottest day of the year and not yet acclimated to the heat. I was sweating badly every were I walked. My warmup was the first mile of the first 5K.
